⁵ and they departed. When David was told about the men, he sent messengers to them, for they felt greatly humiliated. The king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”

³¹ When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.

³⁴ In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho; he laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Joshua son of Nun.^(A)

²² But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

²⁴ They burned down the city and everything in it; only the silver and gold and the vessels of bronze and iron they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.^{(A) 25} But Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, Joshua spared. Her family^[a] has lived in Israel ever since. For she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.^(B)

²⁶ Joshua then pronounced this oath, saying,
