⁵ For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, ^(A)but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling.

⁶ I have not lived in a house ^(A)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about ^(B)in a tent for my dwelling.

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

^16 (A)‘Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, ^(B)that my name might be there. ^(C)But I chose David to be over my people Israel.’

² “On the ^(A)first day of the first month you shall ^(B)erect the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. ³ And you shall put in it the ark of the testimony, and you shall ^(C)screen the ark with the veil.

⁴⁴ “Our fathers had ^(A)the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses ^(B)directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. ⁴⁵ Our fathers in turn ^(C)brought it in with Joshua when they ^(D)dispossessed the nations ^(E)that God drove out before our fathers. So it was ^(F)until the days of David, ^46 (G)who found favor in the sight of God and ^(H)asked to find a dwelling place for ^(I)the God of Jacob.^{[a] 47} But it was ^(J)Solomon who built a house for him. ^48 (K)Yet the Most High does not dwell ^(L)in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

¹⁸ “But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, ^(A)heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built!

^6 (A)But who is able to build him a house, since ^(B)heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him? Who am I to build a house for him, except as a place to make offerings before him?

²⁷ “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, ^(A)heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!
