¹⁸ And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? You know your servant.

²³ and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve.^(A)

The Inescapable God

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.

²⁰ And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God!^{(A) 21} Because of your promise and according to your own heart, you have wrought all this greatness so that your servant may know it. ²² Therefore you are great, O Lord God, for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.^{(B) 23} Who is like your people, like Israel? Is there another^[a] nation on earth whose God went to redeem it as a people and to make a name for himself, doing^[b] great and awesome things, driving out^[c] nations and their gods before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt?^{(C) 24} And you established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God.^(D)

⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him, for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”^(A)

³⁰ Therefore the Lord the God of Israel declares: I promised that your family and the family of your ancestor should go in and out before me forever, but now the Lord declares: Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be treated with contempt.^(A)
