¹⁴So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel.

bring together the elders,^(B)
    gather the children,
    those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom^(C) leave his room

    weep^(E) between the portico and the altar.^(F)
Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord.
    Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,^(G)
    a byword^(H) among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
    ‘Where is their God?^(I)’”

³⁴The priests, however, were too few to skin all the burnt offerings;^(A) so their relatives the Levites helped them until the task was finished and until other priests had been consecrated,^(B) for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
