^5 (A)These were born to him in Jerusalem: ^(B)Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and ^(C)Solomon, four by ^(D)Bath-shua, the daughter of ^(E)Ammiel; ⁶ then Ibhar, ^(F)Elishama, Eliphelet, ⁷ Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, ⁸ Elishama, ^(G)Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine. ⁹ All these were David's sons, besides the sons of the concubines, ^(H)and Tamar was their sister.

³¹ the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of ^(A)Nathan, the son of David,

⁶ and ^(A)Jesse the father of David the king.

And ^(B)David was the father of Solomon by ^(C)the wife of Uriah,

⁵ And of ^(A)all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) he ^(B)has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. ⁶ He said to me, ‘It is ^(C)Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

⁹ Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. ^(A)I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. ^(B)For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. ^10 (C)He shall build a house for my name. ^(D)He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.’

¹¹ “Now, my son, ^(E)the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you. ^12 (F)Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God.

^5 (A)At Gibeon ^(B)the Lord appeared to Solomon ^(C)in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” ⁶ And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because ^(D)he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and ^(E)have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. ⁷ And now, O Lord my God, ^(F)you have made your servant king in place of David my father, ^(G)although I am but a little child. I do not know ^(H)how to go out or come in. ^8 (I)And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, ^(J)too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. ^9 (K)Give your servant therefore an understanding mind ^(L)to govern your people, that I may ^(M)discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”

¹⁰ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. ¹¹ And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right,

³ Solomon ^(A)loved the Lord, ^(B)walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.

¹⁵ He said, “You know that ^(A)the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel fully expected me to reign. However, the kingdom has turned about and become my brother's, ^(B)for it was his from the Lord.
