The Mighty Men Join David
12 (A)Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war. 2 They (B)were bowmen and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the (C)left hand; they were Benjaminites, (D)Saul's kinsmen. 3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, both sons of Shemaah of (E)Gibeah; also Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah, Jehu of (F)Anathoth, 4 Ishmaiah of (G)Gibeon, a mighty man among the thirty and a leader over the thirty; Jeremiah,[a] Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad of Gederah, 5 Eluzai,[b] Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6 Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the (H)Korahites; 7 And Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
8 From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were (I)swift as gazelles upon the mountains: 9 Ezer the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third, 10 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth, 11 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh, 12 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth, 13 Jeremiah tenth, Machbannai eleventh. 14 These Gadites were officers of the army; the least was a (J)match for a hundred men and the greatest for a thousand. 15 These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was (K)overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 And some of the men of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in friendship to help me, my heart will be joined to you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong in my hands, then may the God of our fathers see and rebuke you.” 18 Then (L)the Spirit clothed (M)Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said,
“We are yours, O David,
and with you, O son of Jesse!
(N)Peace, peace to you,
and peace to your helpers!
For your God helps you.”
Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
19 Some of the men of Manasseh deserted to David (O)when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, (P)“At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.”) 20 As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manasseh deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against (Q)the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army. 22 For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.
23 These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops (R)who came to David in Hebron (S)to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, (T)according to the word of the Lord. 24 The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were 6,800 armed troops. 25 Of the Simeonites, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100. 26 Of the Levites 4,600. 27 The prince Jehoiada, of the house of Aaron, and with him 3,700. 28 (U)Zadok, a young man mighty in valor, and twenty-two commanders from his own fathers' house. 29 Of the Benjaminites, (V)the kinsmen of Saul, 3,000, of whom the (W)majority had to that point kept their allegiance to the house of Saul. 30 Of the Ephraimites 20,800, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' houses. 31 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were (X)expressly named to come and make David king. 32 Of Issachar, men who (Y)had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command. 33 Of Zebulun 50,000 seasoned troops, (Z)equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David[c] with (AA)singleness of purpose. 34 Of Naphtali 1,000 commanders with whom were 37,000 men armed with shield and spear. 35 Of the Danites 28,600 men equipped for battle. 36 Of (AB)Asher 40,000 (AC)seasoned troops (AD)ready for battle. 37 Of the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh from beyond the Jordan, 120,000 men armed with all the weapons of war.
38 All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with (AE)a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a (AF)single mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. 40 And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, (AG)cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when (B)brothers dwell in unity![a]
2 It is like the precious (C)oil on (D)the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on (E)the collar of his robes!
3 It is like (F)the dew of (G)Hermon,
which falls on (H)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (I)has commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.

2 Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,
or declare all his praise?
3 Blessed are they who observe justice,
who (E)do righteousness at all times!
4 (F)Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;

that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,

not one of them was left.

they did not wait for (W)his counsel.
14 But they had (X)a wanton craving in the wilderness,
and (Y)put God to the test in the desert;

16 When men in the camp (AB)were jealous of Moses
and Aaron, (AC)the holy one of the Lord,
17 (AD)the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
and covered the company of Abiram.

the flame burned up the wicked.
19 They (AF)made a calf in Horeb
and worshiped a metal image.
20 They (AG)exchanged the glory of God[b]
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They (AH)forgot God, their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22 wondrous works in (AI)the land of Ham,
and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23 Therefore (AJ)he said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his (AK)chosen one,
(AL)stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
24 Then they (AM)despised (AN)the pleasant land,
having (AO)no faith in his promise.
25 They (AP)murmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he (AQ)raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27 and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
(AR)scattering them among the lands.
28 Then they (AS)yoked themselves to the (AT)Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to (AU)the dead;
29 they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30 Then (AV)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31 And that was (AW)counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
32 They (AX)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
33 for they (AY)made his spirit bitter,[c]
and he (AZ)spoke rashly with his lips.
34 They did not (BA)destroy the peoples,
(BB)as the Lord commanded them,
35 but they (BC)mixed with the nations
and learned to do as they did.
36 They served their idols,
which became (BD)a snare to them.
37 They (BE)sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to (BF)the demons;
38 they poured out innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was (BG)polluted with blood.
39 Thus they (BH)became unclean by their acts,
and (BI)played the whore in their deeds.
40 Then (BJ)the anger of the Lord was kindled against (BK)his people,
and he abhorred his (BL)heritage;
41 he (BM)gave them into the hand of the nations,
so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies (BN)oppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 (BO)Many times he delivered them,
but they were rebellious in their (BP)purposes
and were (BQ)brought low through their iniquity.
44 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
when he (BR)heard their cry.
45 For their sake he (BS)remembered his covenant,
and (BT)relented according to (BU)the abundance of his steadfast love.
46 He caused them to be (BV)pitied
by all those who held them captive.
47 (BW)Save us, O Lord our God,
and (BX)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
48 (BY)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!
(BZ)And let all the people say, “Amen!”

Book Five
Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So
107 (CB)Oh give thanks to the Lord, (CC)for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let (CD)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has (CE)redeemed from trouble[d]
3 and (CF)gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 Some (CG)wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way (CH)to a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul (CI)fainted within them.
6 Then they (CJ)cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by (CK)a straight way
till they reached (CL)a city to dwell in.
8 (CM)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he (CN)satisfies the longing soul,
(CO)and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
10 (CP)Some sat in darkness and in (CQ)the shadow of death,
prisoners in (CR)affliction and in irons,
11 for they (CS)had rebelled against the words of God,
and (CT)spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
they fell down, (CU)with none to help.
13 (CV)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of (CW)darkness and the shadow of death,
and (CX)burst their bonds apart.
15 (CY)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he (CZ)shatters the doors of bronze
and cuts in two the bars of iron.
17 Some were (DA)fools through their sinful ways,
and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18 (DB)they loathed any kind of food,
and they (DC)drew near to (DD)the gates of death.
19 (DE)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
20 He (DF)sent out his word and (DG)healed them,
and (DH)delivered them from their destruction.
21 (DI)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them (DJ)offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and (DK)tell of his deeds in (DL)songs of joy!
23 Some (DM)went down to the sea in ships,
doing business on the great waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he (DN)commanded and (DO)raised the stormy wind,
which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
their courage (DP)melted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and (DQ)staggered like drunken men
and (DR)were at their wits' end.[e]
28 (DS)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He (DT)made the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad that the waters[f] were quiet,
and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 (DU)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them (DV)extol him in (DW)the congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He (DX)turns rivers into a desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 (DY)a fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He (DZ)turns a desert into pools of water,
(EA)a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
and they establish (EB)a city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
and get a fruitful yield.
38 (EC)By his blessing they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their livestock diminish.
39 When they are diminished and brought low
through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 (ED)he pours contempt on princes
and (EE)makes them wander (EF)in trackless wastes;
41 but (EG)he raises up the needy out of affliction
and (EH)makes their families like flocks.
42 (EI)The upright see it and are glad,
and (EJ)all wickedness shuts its mouth.
43 (EK)Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

The Ark Brought from Kiriath-Jearim
13 David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. 2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers (A)who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. 3 Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, (B)for we did not seek it[a] in the days of Saul.” 4 All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
Uzzah and the Ark
5 (C)So David assembled all Israel (D)from the (E)Nile[b] of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God (F)from Kiriath-jearim. 6 (G)And David and all Israel went up to (H)Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord who (I)sits enthroned above the cherubim. 7 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of (J)Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio[c] were driving the cart. 8 And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and (K)lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.
9 And when they came to the threshing floor of (L)Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 10 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down (M)because he put out his hand to the ark, and (N)he died there before God. 11 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza[d] to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” 13 So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house (O)of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. (P)And the Lord blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.
David's Wives and Children
14 (Q)And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. 4 (R)These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: (S)Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, (T)Beeliada and (U)Eliphelet.
Philistines Defeated
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and (V)made a raid in the (W)Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through[e] my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 12 And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.
13 And the Philistines yet again (X)made a raid in the valley. 14 And when David again inquired of God, (Y)God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the (Z)fear of him upon all nations.
The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
15 David[f] built houses for himself in the city of David. And he prepared a place for the ark of God and (AA)pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said that no one but the Levites may carry (AB)the ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to him forever. 3 (AC)And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord (AD)to its place, which he had prepared for it. 4 And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and (AE)the Levites: 5 of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, with 120 of his brothers; 6 of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, with 220 of his brothers; 7 of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, with 130 of his brothers; 8 of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, with 200 of his brothers; 9 of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, with 80 of his brothers; 10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, with 112 of his brothers. 11 Then David summoned the priests (AF)Zadok and (AG)Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, 12 and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites. (AH)Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, (AI)to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 (AJ)Because you did not carry it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not seek him according to the rule.” 14 So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders (AK)with the poles, (AL)as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.
16 David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on (AM)musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. 17 So the Levites appointed (AN)Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers (AO)Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, (AP)Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19 The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, (AQ)Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to (AR)Alamoth; 21 but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, (AS)Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to (AT)the Sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should (AU)blow the trumpets before the ark of God. (AV)Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.
25 (AW)So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of (AX)Obed-edom with rejoicing. 26 And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed (AY)seven bulls and seven rams. 27 David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, (AZ)trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on (BA)harps and lyres.
29 And as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.
