⁸ From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles on the mountains:^(A)

¹⁸ The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.^(A)

¹⁰ Then even the valiant warrior whose heart is like the heart of a lion will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are valiant warriors.^(A)

Slaughter of the Edomites

⁵ Amaziah assembled the people of Judah and set them by ancestral houses under commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He mustered those twenty years old and up and found that they were three hundred thousand picked troops fit for war, able to handle spear and shield.^(A)

¹⁶ Some Benjaminites and Judahites came to the stronghold to David.

²² Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant man^[a] of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds; he struck down two sons of^[b] Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen.^(A)

¹⁶ David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.
