The Family of Reuben(A)

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel—(B)he was indeed the firstborn, but because he (C)defiled his father’s bed, (D)his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright; yet (E)Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came a (F)ruler, although [a]the birthright was Joseph’s— the sons of (G)Reuben the firstborn of Israel were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

The sons of Joel were Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, and Beerah his son, whom [b]Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria (H)carried into captivity. He was leader of the Reubenites. And his brethren by their families, (I)when the genealogy of their generations was registered: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, and Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in (J)Aroer, as far as Nebo and Baal Meon. Eastward they settled as far as the [c]entrance of the wilderness this side of the River Euphrates, because their cattle had [d]multiplied (K)in the land of Gilead.

10 Now in the days of Saul they made war (L)with the Hagrites, who fell by their hand; and they dwelt in their tents throughout the entire area east of Gilead.

Eastern Tribes Return to Their Lands

22 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, and said to them: “You have kept (A)all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, (B)and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you. You have not [a]left your brethren these many days, up to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God. And now the Lord your God has given (C)rest to your brethren, as He promised them; now therefore, return and go to your tents and to the land of your possession, (D)which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. But (E)take[b] careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, (F)to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” So Joshua (G)blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.

Now to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, (H)but to the other half of it Joshua gave a possession among their brethren on this side of the Jordan, westward. And indeed, when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them, and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much riches to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. (I)Divide the [c]spoil of your enemies with your brethren.”

So the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to (J)the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

An Altar by the Jordan

10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan—a great, impressive altar.

Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Land Divided East of the Jordan

With the other half-tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (A)which Moses had given them, (B)beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them: from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, (C)and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (D)all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; 11 (E)Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of (F)the remnant of the giants; (G)for Moses had [a]defeated and [b]cast out these.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel (H)did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

14 (I)Only to the tribe of Levi he had given [c]no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, (J)as He said to them.

The Land of Reuben

15 (K)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. 16 Their territory was (L)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, (M)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, (N)and all the plain by Medeba; 17 (O)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 (P)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 (Q)Kirjathaim, (R)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, 20 Beth Peor, (S)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 (T)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (U)whom Moses had struck (V)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. 22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword (W)Balaam the son of Beor, the [d]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

The Land of Gad

24 (X)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 (Y)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, (Z)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before (AA)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, 27 and in the valley (AB)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, (AC)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge (AD)of the [e]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)

29 (AE)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and (AF)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 half of Gilead, and (AG)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the (AH)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.

32 These are the areas which Moses had [f]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward.

The Land East of the Jordan Divided(A)

12 “And this (B)land, which we possessed at that time, (C)from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, and half the mountains of Gilead and (D)its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites. 13 (E)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of the [a]giants. 14 (F)Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, (G)as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and (H)called Bashan after his own name, [b]Havoth Jair, to this day.)

15 “Also I gave (I)Gilead to Machir. 16 And to the Reubenites (J)and the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the River Arnon, the middle of the river as the border, as far as the River Jabbok, (K)the border of the people of Ammon;

33 So (A)Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, (B)the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country. 34 And the children of Gad built (C)Dibon and Ataroth and (D)Aroer, 35 Atroth and Shophan and (E)Jazer and Jogbehah, 36 (F)Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, (G)fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37 And the children of Reuben built (H)Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim, 38 (I)Nebo and (J)Baal Meon (K)(their names being changed) and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.

39 And the children of (L)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and [a]dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40 So Moses (M)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it. 41 Also (N)Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them (O)Havoth Jair.[b] 42 Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.
