Jerusalem Captured

⁴ David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.^(A)

²¹ But the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived in Jerusalem among the Benjaminites to this day.^(A)

⁶³ But the people of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the people of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.^(A)

⁸ then the boundary goes up by the valley of the son of Hinnom at the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem); and the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the valley of Rephaim;^(A)

²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

⁵ The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, now the city of David.

⁶ The king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here; even the blind and the lame will turn you back,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.”^{(A) 7} Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, which is now the city of David. ⁸ David had said on that day, “Whoever would strike down the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack the lame and the blind, those whom David hates.”^[a] Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”^{(B) 9} David occupied the stronghold and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from the Millo inward.^{(C) 10} And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts^[b] was with him.^(D)

¹⁰ But the man would not spend the night; he got up and departed and arrived opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). He had with him a couple of saddled donkeys, and his concubine was with him.^{(A) 11} When they were near Jebus, the day was far spent, and the servant said to his master, “Come now, let us turn aside to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.”^{(B) 12} But his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into a city of foreigners, who do not belong to the people of Israel, but we will continue on to Gibeah.”^(C)

²⁸ Zela, Haeleph, Jebus^[a] (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah,^[b] and Kiriath-jearim^[c]—fourteen towns with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin according to its families.^(A)
