The City of David^(A)

⁴ And David and all Israel ^(B)went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus, ^(C)where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

^21 (A)But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

⁵ But the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not come in here!” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David).

⁶³ As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ^(A)the children of Judah could not drive them out; ^(B)but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

⁸ And the border went up ^(A)by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the ^(B)Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley ^(C)of ^[a]Rephaim northward.

²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

The Conquest of Jerusalem^(A)

^6 (B)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against ^(C)the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.” ⁷ Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion ^(D)(that is, the City of David).

⁸ Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul), ^(E)he shall be chief and captain.” Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”

⁹ Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it ^(F)the City of David. And David built all around from ^[a]the Millo and inward. ¹⁰ So David went on and became great, and ^(G)the Lord God of hosts was with ^(H)him.

¹⁰ However, the man was not willing to spend that night; so he rose and departed, and came opposite ^(A)Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). With him were the two saddled donkeys; his concubine was also with him. ¹¹ They were near Jebus, and the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Come, please, and let us turn aside into this city ^(B)of the Jebusites and lodge in it.”

¹² But his master said to him, “We will not turn aside here into a city of foreigners, who are not of the children of Israel; we will go on ^(C)to Gibeah.”

²⁸ Zelah, Eleph, ^(A)Jebus (which is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kirjath: fourteen cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
