¹⁴ and did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord^[a] put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.^(A)

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this very day and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.^(A)

¹⁴ but now your kingdom will not continue; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has appointed him to be ruler over his people because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”^(A)

David’s Army at Hebron

²³ These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops who came to David in Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, according to the word of the Lord.^(A)

⁹ So may God do to Abner and so may he add to it! For just what the Lord has sworn to David, that will I accomplish for him:^{(A) 10} to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beer-sheba.”^(B)

¹⁷ The Lord has done to you just as he spoke by me, for the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.^(A)

⁶ When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, not by dreams or by Urim or by prophets.^(A)

David Anointed as King

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”^(A)

¹¹ Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”^{(A) 12} He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him, for this is the one.”^{(B) 13} Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.^(C)

¹¹ And the Lord said to the Israelites, “Did I not deliver you^[a] from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines?^{(A) 12} The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.^{(B) 13} Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more. ¹⁴ Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress.”^{(C) 15} And the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you, but deliver us this day!”^{(D) 16} So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he could no longer bear to see Israel suffer.^(E)
