¹⁴ and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned^(A) the kingdom^(B) over to David son of Jesse.

²⁸ Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn^(A) the kingdom^(B) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.^(C)

¹⁴ But now your kingdom^(A) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart^(B) and appointed^(C) him ruler^(D) of his people, because you have not kept^(E) the Lord’s command.”

Others Join David at Hebron

²³ These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron^(A) to turn^(B) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:^(C)

⁹ May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised^(A) him on oath ¹⁰ and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.”^(B)

¹⁷ The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn^(A) the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David.

⁶ He inquired^(A) of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams^(B) or Urim^(C) or prophets.^(D)

Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn^(A) for Saul, since I have rejected^(B) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil^(C) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse^(D) of Bethlehem. I have chosen^(E) one of his sons to be king.”

¹¹ So he asked Jesse, “Are these all^(A) the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”^(B)

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

¹² So he^(C) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome^(D) features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

¹³ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed^(E) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord^(F) came powerfully upon David.^(G) Samuel then went to Ramah.
