8 Самуил, когато остаря, постави синовете си съдии над Израиля.
2 Името на първородния му беше Иоил, а името на втория му Авия; те бяха съдии във Вир-савее.
3 Но синовете му не ходеха в неговите пътища, но се отклониха <та отиваха> след сребролюбието, и вземаха подкуп, и извръщаха правосъдието.
4 Тогава всичките Израилеви старейшини се събраха, та дойдоха при Самуила в Рама и му рекоха:
5 Ето, ти остаря, и синовете ти не ходят в твоите пътища; постави ни, прочее, цар, който да ни съди, както е у всичките народи.
6 Обаче на Самуила не бе угодно гдето рекоха: Дай ни цар, който да ни съди. И Самуил се помоли на Господа.
7 А Господ каза на Самуила: Послушай гласа на людете за всичко, що ти говорят, защото не отхвърлиха тебе, но Мене отхвърлиха, за да не царувам над тях.
8 Според всичките дела, които те са вършили от деня, когато съм ги извел от Египет дори до тоя ден, като са Ме оставяли и са служили на други богове, така правят и на тебе.
9 Сега, прочее, слушай гласа им, обаче тържествено протестирай пред тях, и покажи им как ще постъпва царят, който ще царува над тях.
10 Самуил, прочее, каза всичките Господни думи на людете, които искаха цар от него.
11 Каза още: Така ще постъпва царят, който ще се възцари над вас; ще взема синовете ви и ще ги определя за колесниците си, и да му бъдат конници, и за да тичат пред колесниците му.
12 И ще си ги назначава хилядници и петдесетници, и <ще ги поставя> да работят земята му, да жънат жетвата му, и да правят военните му оръжия и приборите за колесниците му.
13 Ще взема и дъщерите ви за мироварици и готвачки и хлебарки.
14 И ще взема по-добрите от нивите ви, лозята ви и маслините ви и ще ги дава на слугите си.
15 Ще взема и десетъка от посевите ви и от лозята ви и ще ги дава на скопците си и на слугите си.
16 И ще взема слугите ви, слугините ви, по-добрите момчета, и ослите ви и ще ги употребява в своите работи.
17 Ще взема десетък от стадата ви; и вие ще му бъдете слуги.
18 В оня ден ще викате поради царя си, когото ще сте си избрали; но Господ няма да ви послуша в оня ден.
19 Обаче, людете не искаха да послушат Самуиловия глас, а рекоха: Не, но цар нека има над нас,
20 за да бъдем и ние както всичките народи, и нашият цар да ни съди, и да ни предвожда, и да воюва в боевете ни.
21 И Самуил, като изслуша всичките думи на людете, каза ги в ушите на Господа.
22 А Господ каза на Самуила: Послушай гласа им и постави им цар. Тогава Самуил каза на Израилевите мъже: Идете всеки в града си.

Israel Demands a King
8 Now it came to pass when Samuel was (A)old that he (B)made his (C)sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons (D)did not walk in his ways; they turned aside (E)after dishonest gain, (F)took bribes, and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (G)make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing (H)displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel (I)prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for (J)they have not rejected you, but (K)they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and (L)show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, (M)“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your (N)sons and appoint them for his own (O)chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will (P)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And (Q)he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest [a]young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord (R)will not hear you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless the people (S)refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be (T)like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. 22 So the Lord said to Samuel, (U)“Heed their voice, and make them a king.”
And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”

8 Y aconteció que cuando Samuel era ya viejo, puso a sus hijos como jueces sobre Israel(A). 2 El nombre de su primogénito era Joel, y el nombre del segundo, Abías; estos juzgaban en Beerseba(B). 3 Pero sus hijos no anduvieron por los caminos de él, sino que se desviaron tras ganancias deshonestas, aceptaron sobornos y pervirtieron el derecho(C).
4 Entonces se reunieron todos los ancianos de Israel y fueron a Samuel en Ramá(D), 5 y le dijeron: Mira, has envejecido y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos. Ahora pues, danos un rey para que nos juzgue, como todas las naciones(E). 6 Pero[a] fue desagradable[b] a los ojos de Samuel que dijeran: Danos un rey que nos juzgue(F). Y Samuel oró al Señor(G). 7 Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Escucha la voz del pueblo en cuanto a todo lo que te digan, pues no te han desechado a ti, sino que me han desechado a mí para que no sea rey sobre ellos(H). 8 Así como todas las obras que han hecho desde el día en que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, abandonándome y sirviendo a otros dioses, así lo están haciendo contigo también. 9 Ahora pues, oye su voz. Sin embargo, les advertirás[c] solemnemente(I) y les harás saber el proceder[d] del rey que reinará sobre ellos(J).
10 Entonces Samuel habló todas las palabras del Señor al pueblo que le había pedido rey(K). 11 Y dijo: Así será el proceder[e] del rey que reinará sobre vosotros(L): tomará a vuestros hijos, los pondrá a su servicio(M) en sus carros y entre su gente de a caballo, y correrán delante de sus carros(N). 12 Nombrará para su servicio comandantes de mil y de cincuenta(O), y a otros para labrar sus campos y recoger sus cosechas, y hacer sus armas de guerra y pertrechos para sus carros. 13 Tomará también a vuestras hijas para perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas. 14 Tomará lo mejor de vuestros campos, de vuestros viñedos y de vuestros olivares y los dará a sus siervos(P). 15 De vuestro grano y de vuestras viñas tomará el diezmo, para darlo a sus oficiales y a sus siervos. 16 Tomará también vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, vuestros mejores jóvenes y vuestros asnos, y los usará[f] para su servicio. 17 De vuestros rebaños tomará el diezmo, y vosotros mismos vendréis a ser sus siervos. 18 Ese día clamaréis por causa de vuestro rey a quien escogisteis para vosotros(Q), pero el Señor no os responderá en ese día(R).
19 No obstante, el pueblo rehusó oír la voz de Samuel(S), y dijeron: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros, 20 a fin de que seamos como todas las naciones(T), para que nuestro rey nos juzgue, salga delante de nosotros y dirija[g] nuestras batallas. 21 Después que Samuel escuchó todas las palabras del pueblo, las repitió a oídos del Señor(U). 22 Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Oye su voz y nómbrales un rey[h](V). Entonces Samuel dijo a los hombres de Israel: Váyase cada uno a su ciudad.
