10 Братья, я хочу, чтобы вы знали о том, что все наши праотцы находились под облаком и что все они прошли сквозь море.[a] 2 Они все были погружены во имя Мусы в облако и в море. 3 Они все ели одну и ту же духовную пищу[b] 4 и пили одно и то же духовное питьё. Они пили из духовной скалы, которая сопровождала их,[c] и скалой этой был Масих. 5 Но ко многим из них Всевышний не был благосклонен и в конце концов их тела усеяли пустыню.[d]

6 Всё это служит нам примером: мы не должны желать зла, как желали они. 7 Не поклоняйтесь идолам, как это делали некоторые из них. Ведь написано: «Народ сел есть и пить, а потом встал и начал веселиться»[e]. 8 Среди нас не должно быть распутства, которому предавались некоторые из них, что и привело к гибели двадцати трёх тысяч человек в один день.[f] 9 Нам нельзя испытывать Масиха, как делали некоторые из них и потом погибли от укусов змей.[g] 10 Не ропщите, как это делали некоторые из них, за что и были умерщвлены ангелом-губителем.[h]

11 Всё это случилось с ними как прообраз, а записано это для назидания нам. Ведь мы живём в последнее время. 12 Так что если кому-то кажется, что он твёрдо стоит на ногах, то пусть остерегается, как бы ему не упасть! 13 Все испытания, с которыми до сих пор вам приходилось сталкиваться, были ничем иным, как обычными человеческими испытаниями. Всевышний никогда не допустит, чтобы вы были испытываемы сверх сил, и Он верен своим обещаниям. Когда вас постигает испытание, Он даёт вам и выход, так чтобы вы смогли его перенести.

Предостережение против идолов

14 Поэтому, дорогие мои, избегайте идолопоклонства. 15 Я говорю вам как разумным людям, рассудите сами. 16 Разве Чаша Благословения[i], которую мы благословляем, не приобщает нас к крови Масиха? И разве хлеб, который мы преломляем, не приобщает нас к телу Масиха? 17 Хлеб один, и мы, как бы много нас ни было, составляем одно тело, потому что едим один и тот же хлеб.

18 Посмотрите на исраильский народ: разве все, кто ест принесённое в жертву, не являются участниками жертвенника?[j] 19 Конечно, я не говорю, что идол или же принесённое ему в жертву имеет какое-либо значение. 20 Нет, но дело в том, что язычники, принося свои жертвы, приносят их демонам, а не Всевышнему,[k] а я не хочу, чтобы вы становились сообщниками демонов. 21 Ведь не можете же вы пить одновременно из Чаши Повелителя и из чаши демонов[l], нельзя в одно и то же время участвовать в трапезе Повелителя и в трапезе демонов. 22 Или мы думаем, что можем безнаказанно возбуждать ревность Вечного Повелителя?[m] Разве мы сильнее Его?

Ещё раз о пище, принесённой в жертву идолам

23 Вы говорите: «Всё мне позволено!» Но не всё полезно. «Всё позволено!» Но не всё служит к созиданию. 24 Пусть никто не старается угодить себе, но заботится о том, что несёт благо другим.

25 Ешьте всё, что продаётся на базаре, со спокойной совестью, 26 потому что «земля и всё, что наполняет её, принадлежат Вечному Повелителю»[n]. 27 Если неверующий человек пригласит вас на обед, то ешьте всё, что вам предложат, не задавая вопросов, со спокойной совестью. 28 Но если вам кто-либо при этом скажет: «Это жертвенное мясо», то не ешьте ради человека, который вам это сказал, и ради совести, – 29 я имею в виду совесть другого человека, а не вашу собственную. Так для чего же мне есть это мясо, давая лишний повод чужой совести осуждать мою свободу? 30 Если я ем с благодарностью, то почему я должен быть осуждаем за ту пищу, за которую я благодарю Всевышнего?

31 Стало быть, что бы вы ни делали, едите вы или пьёте, делайте так, чтобы был прославляем Всевышний. 32 Не будьте ни для кого камнем преткновения, ни для иудеев, ни для язычников, ни для общины верующих, принадлежащей Всевышнему. 33 Старайтесь, как и я, угождать всем во всём. Я ищу блага не для самого себя, а для многих других, чтобы они были спасены.

Lessons from Israel’s Idolatry

10 I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters,[a] about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground. 2 In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses. 3 All of them ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

6 These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, 7 or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”[b] 8 And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.

9 Nor should we put Christ[c] to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites. 10 And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death. 11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.

12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

14 So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. 15 You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true. 16 When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? 17 And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body. 18 Think about the people of Israel. Weren’t they united by eating the sacrifices at the altar?

19 What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods? 20 No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too. 22 What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?

23 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”[d]—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. 24 Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

25 So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience. 26 For “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[e]

27 If someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience. 28 (But suppose someone tells you, “This meat was offered to an idol.” Don’t eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you. 29 It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks? 30 If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?

31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles[f] or the church of God. 33 I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.

10 Brethren, I will not, that ye not know [Soothly, brethren, I will not you to unknow], that all our fathers were under [a] cloud, and all passed the sea;

2 and all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea;

3 and all ate the same spiritual meat,

4 and all drank the same spiritual drink; and they drank of the spiritual stone following them [forsooth they drank of the spiritual stone following them]; and the stone was Christ.

5 But not in full many of them it was well pleasant to God; for why they were cast down in [the] desert.

6 But these things were done in figure of us, that we be not coveters of evil things, as [and] they coveted.

7 Neither be ye made idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat to eat and drink, and they rose up to play [and they have risen up to play].

8 Neither do we fornication, as some of them did fornication, and three and twenty thousand were dead in one day [and three and twenty thousand fell, or died, in one day].

9 Neither tempt we Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished of serpents.

10 Neither grumble ye, as some of them grumbled, and they perished of a destroyer. [Neither grutch ye, as some of them grutched, and they perished of the waster, or destroyer.]

11 And all these things fell to them in figure; but they be written to our amending, into whom the ends of the worlds be come [soothly they be written to our correction, or amending, into whom the ends of the world have come].

12 Therefore he that guesseth him(self), that he standeth, see he, that he fall not. [And so he that guesseth him to stand, see, that he fall not.]

13 Temptation take not you, but man's temptation; for God is true, which shall not suffer you to be tempted above that that ye be able; but he shall make with temptation also purveyance, that ye be able to suffer [that ye may sustain].

14 Wherefore, ye most dear-worthy to me, flee ye from the worshipping of maumets [flee from worshipping of idols].

15 As to prudent men I speak, deem ye yourselves that thing that I say.

16 Whether the cup of blessing which we bless, is not the communing of Christ's blood? and whether the bread which we break, is not the part taking of the body of the Lord? [The cup of blessing which we bless, whether it is not the communing of Christ's blood? and the bread which we break, whether it is not the dealing, or part taking, of the body of the Lord?]

17 For we many be one bread and one body, all we that take part of one bread and of one cup.

18 See ye Israel after the flesh, whether they that eat sacrifices, be not partners of the altar?

19 What therefore say I, that a thing that is offered to idols is any thing, or that the idol is any thing?

20 But those things that heathen men offer, they offer to devils, and not to God. But I will not, that ye be made fellows of fiends;

21 for ye be not able to drink the cup of the Lord [for ye may not drink the cup of the Lord], and the cup of fiends; ye be not able to be partners of the board of the Lord [ye may not be partners of the board of the Lord], and of the board of fiends.

22 Whether we have envy to the Lord? whether we be stronger than he?

23 All things be leaveful to me, but not all things be speedful. All things be leaveful to me, but not all things edify.

24 No man seek that thing that is his own, but that thing that is of another.

25 All thing that is sold in the butchery, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.

26 The earth and the plenty of it, is the Lord's.

27 If any of heathen men call you to supper [Forsooth if any of unfaithful, or heathen men, calleth you to supper], and ye will go, all thing that is set to you, eat ye, asking nothing for conscience.

28 But if any man saith [If any man soothly say to you], This thing is offered to idols, do not ye eat, for him that showed [this thing], and for conscience;

29 and I say not, thy conscience, but of another [man's]. But whereto is my freedom deemed of another man's conscience [Soothly whereto is my liberty, or freedom, deemed of another man's conscience]?

30 Therefore if I take part with grace, what am I blasphemed, for that that I do thankings [for that that I do graces, or thankings]?

31 Therefore whether ye eat, or drink, or do any other thing, do ye all things to the glory of God.

32 Be ye without offence to Jews, and to heathen men, and to the church of God;

33 as [and] I by all things please to all men, not seeking that that is profitable to me [not seeking what is profitable to me], but that that is profitable to many men, that they be made safe.
