14 Стремете се към любовта и ревностно желайте духовни дарби, и особено дарбата да пророкувате. 2 Този, който има дарбата да говори друг език, говори не на хората, а на Бога, защото никой не може да разбере какво казва. Той говори тайни чрез Духа. 3 А този, който пророкува, говори неща, които укрепват, насърчават и утешават хората. 4 Който има дарбата да говори друг език, укрепва себе си, а който има дарбата да пророкува, укрепва църквата. 5 Искам всички вие да имате дарбата да говорите други езици, но още повече искам да имате дарбата да пророкувате. 13 Следователно този, който говори друг език, трябва да се моли също и да може да обясни думите си. 14 Защото ако се моля на друг език, духът ми се моли, но умът ми остава безплоден. 15 Какво да правя тогава? Ще се моля с духа си, но също и с ума си. Ще пея песни на възхвала с духа си, но също и с ума си. 16 Защото ако изречеш благословение само с духа си, как обикновеният слушател ще каже „Амин“ на твоята благодарствена молитва, ако не разбира това, което казваш? 17 Може да благодариш много хубаво, но не помагаш на другия човек да укрепне.

18 Аз благодаря на Бога, че моята дарба да говоря други езици е по-голяма от тази на всеки един от вас, 19 но в църквата предпочитам да изрека пет думи, които могат да се разберат, отколкото десет хиляди думи на друг език, така че да поуча и другите.

ще говоря на тези хора,

22 Така и дарбата за други езици е знак не за вярващите, а за невярващите. Пророческата дарба е знак не за невярващите, а за вярващите. 23 Ето защо ако цялата църква се събере и всички говорят други езици, ако влязат външни хора или невярващи, няма ли да кажат, че сте полудели? 24 Но ако всички пророкуват, когато влезе невярващ или външен човек, той ще осъзнае греха си чрез думите им, ще бъде осъден чрез думите им, 25 тайните на неговото сърце ще бъдат изявени и тогава той ще падне по очи и ще се поклони на Бога, казвайки: „Бог наистина е сред вас!“[b]

26 Какво да правим тогава, братя и сестри? Когато се съберете, един има псалм, друг — поучение, трети — откровение, един говори чужд език, а друг обяснява думите му. Всичко трябва да се прави за укрепването на църквата. 27 Ако някой говори друг език, трябва да говорят двама или най-много трима, и то един по един, а някой да обяснява това, което се говори. 28 А ако няма кой да обяснява, те трябва да мълчат в църквата и да говорят на себе си и на Бога.

29 Двама или трима пророци трябва да говорят, а другите — да изпитват думите им. 30 Ако нещо бъде разкрито на друг човек, който седи, говорещият трябва да замълчи, 31 защото всички можете да пророкувате един след друг, за да може всички да се поучат и всички да бъдат насърчени. 32 Духовете, които вдъхновяват пророците, са под контрола на пророците. 33 Защото Бог носи не безредие, а мир.

Както във всички църкви на Божиите святи хора, 34 жените трябва да мълчат в църквите. На тях не им е позволено да говорят и те трябва да се подчиняват, както казва и законът. 35 Ако искат да научат нещо, нека попитат мъжете си вкъщи, защото е срам за една жена да говори в църквата. 36 Нима от вас излезе Божието слово? 37 Ако някой смята, че е пророк или че има духовна дарба, трябва да разпознае, че това, което ви пиша, е заповед от Господа. 38 Ако някой не приеме това, и той няма да бъде приет от Бога.

39 И така, братя и сестри, стремете се да пророкувате и не забранявайте да се говорят други езици, 40 но нека всичко се върши както трябва и с ред.

Prophecy a Superior Gift

14 (A)Pursue love, yet earnestly (B)desire (C)spiritual gifts, but especially that you may (D)prophesy. 2 For the one who (E)speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one [a]understands, but [b]in his spirit he speaks (F)mysteries. 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for (G)edification, [c](H)exhortation, and consolation. 4 The one who (I)speaks in a tongue (J)edifies himself; but the one who (K)prophesies (L)edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all (M)spoke in tongues, but (N)rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who (O)speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive (P)edification.

6 But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of (Q)revelation, or of (R)knowledge, or of (S)prophecy, or of (T)teaching? 7 Yet even lifeless instruments, whether flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if (U)the trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So you too, unless you produce intelligible speech by the tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will just be (V)talking to the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of [d]languages in the world, and none is incapable of meaning. 11 So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (W)unintelligible to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks will be unintelligible [e]to me. 12 So you too, since you are eager to possess [f]spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the (X)edification of the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. 15 (Y)What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will (Z)sing with the spirit, but I will sing with the mind also. 16 For otherwise, if you bless God [g]in the spirit only, how will the one who occupies the place of the [h]outsider know to say (AA)the “Amen” at your (AB)giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not (AC)edified. 18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 nevertheless, in church I prefer to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Instruction for the Church

20 (AD)Brothers and sisters, (AE)do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil (AF)be infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In (AG)the [i]Law it is written: “(AH)By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord. 22 So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but (AI)prophecy is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and [j]outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that (AJ)you are insane? 24 But if all (AK)prophesy, and an unbeliever or an [k]outsider enters, he is (AL)convicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 (AM)the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will (AN)fall on his face and worship God, (AO)declaring that God is certainly among you.

26 (AP)What is the outcome then, (AQ)brothers and sisters? When you assemble, (AR)each one has a (AS)psalm, has a (AT)teaching, has a (AU)revelation, has a (AV)tongue, has an (AW)interpretation. (AX)All things are to be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a (AY)tongue, it must be by two or at the most three, and each one in turn, and one is to (AZ)interpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he is to keep silent in church; and have him speak to himself and to God. 29 Have two or three (BA)prophets speak, and have the others (BB)pass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, then the first one is to keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be [l]exhorted; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of (BC)confusion, but of peace.

As in (BD)all the churches of the [m](BE)saints, 34 the women are to (BF)keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but (BG)are to subject themselves, just as (BH)the Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is [n]improper for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God first went out? Or has it come to you only?

37 (BI)If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or (BJ)spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you (BK)are the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone does not recognize this, [o]he is not recognized.

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, (BL)earnestly desire to (BM)prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But (BN)all things must be done properly and in an orderly way.

Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues

14 Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified.

6 Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how shall I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will any one know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible, how will any one know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning; 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

13 Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you bless[a] with the spirit, how can any one in the position of an outsider[b] say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may give thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature. 21 In the law it is written, “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church assembles and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

Orderly Worship

26 What then, brethren? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silence in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. 35 If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. 36 What! Did the word of God originate with you, or are you the only ones it has reached?

37 If any one thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. 38 If any one does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brethren, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues; 40 but all things should be done decently and in order.
