4 (A)he is puffed up with conceit and (B)understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for (C)controversy and for (D)quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people (E)who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, (F)imagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But (G)godliness (H)with contentment is great gain, 7 for (I)we brought nothing into the world, and[a] we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But (J)if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But (K)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, (L)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that (M)plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of (N)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
11 But as for you, (O)O man of God, (P)flee these things. (Q)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 (R)Fight the good fight of the faith. (S)Take hold of the eternal life (T)to which you were called and about which you made (U)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 (V)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, (W)who in his testimony before[b] Pontius Pilate made (X)the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until (Y)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display (Z)at the proper time—he who is (AA)the blessed and only Sovereign, (AB)the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 (AC)who alone has immortality, (AD)who dwells in (AE)unapproachable light, (AF)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
17 As for the rich in (AG)this present age, charge them (AH)not to be haughty, nor (AI)to set their hopes on (AJ)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, (AK)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(B) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(C) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 But godliness with contentment(D) is great gain.(E) 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(F) 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(G) 9 Those who want to get rich(H) fall into temptation and a trap(I) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(J) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(K) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(L)
Final Charge to Timothy
11 But you, man of God,(M) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(N) faith, love,(O) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(P) of the faith. Take hold of(Q) the eternal life(R) to which you were called when you made your good confession(S) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(T) made the good confession,(U) I charge you(V) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(W) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(X) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(Y)—God, the blessed(Z) and only Ruler,(AA) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(AB) 16 who alone is immortal(AC) and who lives in unapproachable light,(AD) whom no one has seen or can see.(AE) To him be honor and might forever. 17 Command those who are rich(AG) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(AH) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(AI) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(AJ)
