A Call to Prayer
2 First of all, then, I urge that (A)requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people, 2 (B)for kings and all who are in [a]authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and [b]dignity. 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of (C)God our Savior, 4 (D)who wants all people to be (E)saved and to (F)come to the [c]knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is (G)one God, and (H)one mediator also between God and mankind, the (I)man Christ Jesus, 6 who (J)gave Himself as a ransom for all, the (K)testimony [d]given at [e](L)the proper time. 7 (M)For this I was appointed as a [f]preacher and (N)an apostle ((O)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), as a teacher of (P)the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Instructions for Believers
8 Therefore (Q)I want the men (R)in every place to pray, (S)lifting up (T)holy hands, without anger and dispute. 9 Likewise, I want (U)women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, [g]modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive apparel, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 11 (V)A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 (W)But I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 (X)For it was Adam who was first [h]created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but (Y)the woman was [i]deceived and [j]became a wrongdoer. 15 But [k]women will be [l]preserved through [m]childbirth—if they continue in (Z)faith, love, and sanctity, with moderation.

A Call to Prayer
2 First of all, then, I urge that petitions (specific requests), prayers, intercessions (prayers for others) and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all people, 2 for [a]kings and all who are in [positions of] high authority, so that we may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This [kind of praying] is good and acceptable and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who [b]wishes all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge and recognition of the [divine] truth. 5 For there is [only] one God, and [only] one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom [a substitutionary sacrifice to atone] for all, the testimony given at the right and proper time. 7 And for this matter I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying [when I say this]—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger and disputing or quarreling or doubt [in their mind].
Women Instructed
9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and discreetly in proper clothing, not with [elaborately] braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but instead adorned by good deeds [helping others], as is proper for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with all submissiveness. 12 I do not allow a woman to [c]teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet [in the congregation]. 13 For Adam was formed first [by God from the earth], then Eve;(A) 14 and it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was led astray and [d]fell into sin.(B) 15 But women will be [e]preserved (saved) through [the pain and dangers of] the bearing of children [f]if they continue in faith and love and holiness with self-control and discretion.

- 1 Timothy 2:4 Salvation is offered to everyone, but each individual must choose to accept or reject God’s gracious offer.
- 1 Timothy 2:12 The early church evidently followed Jewish practices in religious education. In Israel, mothers taught their daughters, and it was the father’s responsibility to teach his sons in all areas, including religious education. So Paul’s prohibitions here are consistent with the practices of his day.
- 1 Timothy 2:14 Lit has come to be in.
- 1 Timothy 2:15 This is considered one of the more difficult verses in the NT to interpret. Part of the difficulty is that the Greek verb rendered “preserved” is literally “saved,” which could refer either to physical preservation or to salvation. Some expositors interpret the verb as referring to the blessings of a woman’s role as wife and mother, especially in regard to raising godly children. However, the wording of the verse seen here reflects the interpretation that Paul is speaking, in broad terms, of protection from the dangers of childbirth.
- 1 Timothy 2:15 The blessings on a woman are the result of her adherence to the virtues listed.

2 Admoesto-te, pois, antes de tudo, que se façam deprecações, orações, intercessões e ações de graças por todos os homens, 2 pelos reis e por todos os que estão em eminência, para que tenhamos uma vida quieta e sossegada, em toda a piedade e honestidade. 3 Porque isto é bom e agradável diante de Deus, nosso Salvador, 4 que quer que todos os homens se salvem e venham ao conhecimento da verdade. 5 Porque há um só Deus e um só mediador entre Deus e os homens, Jesus Cristo, homem, 6 o qual se deu a si mesmo em preço de redenção por todos, para servir de testemunho a seu tempo. 7 Para o que (digo a verdade em Cristo, não minto) fui constituído pregador, e apóstolo, e doutor dos gentios, na fé e na verdade.
8 Quero, pois, que os homens orem em todo o lugar, levantando mãos santas, sem ira nem contenda.
Os deveres das mulheres cristãs
9 Que do mesmo modo as mulheres se ataviem em traje honesto, com pudor e modéstia, não com tranças, ou com ouro, ou pérolas, ou vestidos preciosos, 10 mas (como convém a mulheres que fazem profissão de servir a Deus) com boas obras. 11 A mulher aprenda em silêncio, com toda a sujeição. 12 Não permito, porém, que a mulher ensine, nem use de autoridade sobre o marido, mas que esteja em silêncio. 13 Porque primeiro foi formado Adão, depois Eva. 14 E Adão não foi enganado, mas a mulher, sendo enganada, caiu em transgressão. 15 Salvar-se-á, porém, dando à luz filhos, se permanecer com modéstia na fé, no amor e na santificação.

2 Antes de tudo, recomendo que se façam súplicas, orações, intercessões e ações de graças por todos os homens; 2 pelos reis e por todos os que exercem autoridade, para que tenhamos uma vida tranqüila e pacífica, com toda a piedade e dignidade. 3 Isso é bom e agradável perante Deus, nosso Salvador, 4 que deseja que todos os homens sejam salvos e cheguem ao conhecimento da verdade.
5 Pois há um só Deus
e um só mediador
entre Deus e os homens:
o homem Cristo Jesus,
6 o qual se entregou a si mesmo
como resgate por todos.
Esse foi o testemunho dado
em seu próprio tempo.
7 Para isso fui designado pregador e apóstolo (Digo-lhes a verdade, não minto.), mestre da verdadeira fé aos gentios[a].
8 Quero, pois, que os homens orem em todo lugar, levantando mãos santas, sem ira e sem discussões.
9 Da mesma forma, quero que as mulheres se vistam modestamente, com decência e discrição, não se adornando com tranças e com ouro, nem com pérolas ou com roupas caras, 10 mas com boas obras, como convém a mulheres que declaram adorar a Deus.
11 A mulher deve aprender em silêncio, com toda a sujeição. 12 Não permito que a mulher ensine, nem que tenha autoridade sobre o homem. Esteja, porém, em silêncio. 13 Porque primeiro foi formado Adão, e depois Eva. 14 E Adão não foi enganado, mas sim a mulher que, tendo sido enganada, tornou-se transgressora. 15 Entretanto, a mulher[b] será salva[c] dando à luz filhos — se permanecerem na fé, no amor e na santidade, com bom senso.
