Instructions on Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority,(A) so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness(B) and dignity.(C) This is good, and it pleases God our Savior,(D) who wants everyone(E) to be saved(F) and to come to the knowledge of the truth.(G)

For there is one God(H) and one mediator(I) between God and mankind, the man(J) Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all,(K) a testimony at the proper time.

For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle(L) (I am telling the truth;[a] I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles(M) in faith and truth.

Instructions to Men and Women

Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.(N) Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing,(O) with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold,(P) pearls, or expensive apparel, 10 but with good works,(Q) as is proper for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman is to learn quietly with full submission.(R) 12 I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(S) 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.(T) 15 But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness,(U) with good sense.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

This saying is trustworthy:(V) “If anyone aspires to be an overseer,[b](W) he desires a noble work.” An overseer,(X) therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible,(Y) respectable, hospitable,(Z) able to teach, not an excessive drinker, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy.(AA) He must manage his own household competently and have his children under control with all dignity. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a new convert, or he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as the devil.(AB) Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the devil’s(AC) trap.

Deacons,(AD) likewise, should be worthy of respect, not hypocritical, not drinking a lot of wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith(AE) with a clear conscience.(AF) 10 They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons. 11 Wives,[c](AG) likewise, should be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled,(AH) faithful in everything. 12 Deacons are to be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households competently. 13 For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(A) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(B) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(C) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(D) God our Savior,(E) who wants(F) all people(G) to be saved(H) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(I) For there is one God(J) and one mediator(K) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(L) who gave himself as a ransom(M) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(N) at the proper time.(O) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(P)—and a true and faithful teacher(Q) of the Gentiles.(R)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(S) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(T) 10 but with good deeds,(U) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(V) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(W) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(X) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(Y) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(Z) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(AA) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(AB) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(AC) faithful to his wife,(AD) temperate,(AE) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(AF) able to teach,(AG) not given to drunkenness,(AH) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(AI) not a lover of money.(AJ) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[d] respect.(AK) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(AL) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(AM) and fall under the same judgment(AN) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(AO) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(AP)

In the same way, deacons[e](AQ) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(AR) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(AS) 10 They must first be tested;(AT) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[f] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(AU) but temperate(AV) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(AW) and must manage his children and his household well.(AX) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
