Greeting

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,

To Timothy, a (A)true son in the faith:

(B)Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

No Other Doctrine

As I urged you (C)when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may [a]charge some (D)that they teach no other doctrine, (E)nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. Now (F)the purpose of the commandment is love (G)from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from [b]sincere faith, from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to (H)idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

But we know that the law is (I)good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is [c]contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the (J)blessed God which was (K)committed to my trust.

Glory to God for His Grace(L)

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has (M)enabled me, (N)because He counted me faithful, (O)putting me into the ministry, 13 although (P)I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an [d]insolent man; but I obtained mercy because (Q)I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 (R)And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, (S)with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 (T)This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that (U)Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to (V)the King eternal, (W)immortal, (X)invisible, to [e]God (Y)who alone is wise, (Z)be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Fight the Good Fight

18 This [f]charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are (AA)Hymenaeus and (AB)Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to (AC)blaspheme.

Pray for All Men

Therefore I [g]exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, (AD)for kings and (AE)all who are in [h]authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and [i]reverence. For this is (AF)good and acceptable in the sight (AG)of God our Savior, (AH)who desires all men to be saved (AI)and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (AJ)For there is one God and (AK)one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, (AL)who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (AM)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth [j]in Christ and not lying—(AN)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Men and Women in the Church

I desire therefore that the men pray (AO)everywhere, (AP)lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the (AQ)women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and [k]moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 (AR)but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And (AS)I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications of Overseers

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a [l]bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not [m]given to wine, not violent, [n]not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not [o]covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); not a [p]novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the (AT)snare of the devil.

Qualifications of Deacons

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, (AU)not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the [q]mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not [r]slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons (AV)obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The Great Mystery

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and [s]ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the [t]mystery of godliness:

(AW)God[u] was manifested in the flesh,
(AX)Justified in the Spirit,
(AY)Seen by angels,
(AZ)Preached among the Gentiles,
(BA)Believed on in the world,
(BB)Received up in glory.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God(A) our Savior(B) and of Christ Jesus our hope,(C)

To Timothy(D) my true son(E) in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(F)

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,(G) stay there in Ephesus(H) so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines(I) any longer or to devote themselves to myths(J) and endless genealogies.(K) Such things promote controversial speculations(L) rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart(M) and a good conscience(N) and a sincere faith.(O) Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers(P) of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.(Q)

We know that the law is good(R) if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous(S) but for lawbreakers and rebels,(T) the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine(U) 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.(V)

The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,(W) that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.(X) 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor(Y) and a violent man, I was shown mercy(Z) because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.(AA) 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,(AB) along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.(AC)

15 Here is a trustworthy saying(AD) that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners(AE)—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy(AF) so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience(AG) as an example for those who would believe(AH) in him and receive eternal life.(AI) 17 Now to the King(AJ) eternal, immortal,(AK) invisible,(AL) the only God,(AM) be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AN)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(AO) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(AP) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(AQ) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(AR) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(AS) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(AT) and Alexander,(AU) whom I have handed over to Satan(AV) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(AW) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(AX) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(AY) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(AZ) God our Savior,(BA) who wants(BB) all people(BC) to be saved(BD) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(BE) For there is one God(BF) and one mediator(BG) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(BH) who gave himself as a ransom(BI) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(BJ) at the proper time.(BK) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(BL)—and a true and faithful teacher(BM) of the Gentiles.(BN)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(BO) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(BP) 10 but with good deeds,(BQ) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(BR) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(BS) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(BT) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(BU) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(BV) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(BW) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(BX) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(BY) faithful to his wife,(BZ) temperate,(CA) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(CB) able to teach,(CC) not given to drunkenness,(CD) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(CE) not a lover of money.(CF) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[d] respect.(CG) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(CH) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(CI) and fall under the same judgment(CJ) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(CK) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(CL)

In the same way, deacons[e](CM) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(CN) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(CO) 10 They must first be tested;(CP) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[f] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(CQ) but temperate(CR) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(CS) and must manage his children and his household well.(CT) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Reasons for Paul’s Instructions

14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(CU) of the living God,(CV) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(CW) from which true godliness(CX) springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,(CY)
    was vindicated by the Spirit,[g]
was seen by angels,
    was preached among the nations,(CZ)
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.(DA)
