Correcting False Teaching
1 Paul, (A)an apostle of (B)Christ Jesus (C)according to the commandment of (D)God our Savior, and of (E)Christ Jesus, who is our (F)hope,
2 To (G)Timothy, (H)my true [a]son in the faith: (I)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and (J)Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 Just as I urged you [b]upon my departure for (K)Macedonia, to remain on at (L)Ephesus so that you would instruct certain people not to (M)teach strange doctrines, 4 nor to [c]pay attention to (N)myths and endless (O)genealogies, which give rise to useless (P)speculation rather than (Q)advance [d]the plan of God, which is by faith, so I urge you now. 5 But the goal of our [e](R)instruction is love (S)from a pure heart, from a (T)good conscience, and from a sincere (U)faith. 6 Some people have strayed from these things and have turned aside to (V)fruitless discussion, 7 (W)wanting to be (X)teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
8 But we know that (Y)the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 realizing the fact that (Z)law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and (AA)rebellious, for the (AB)ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and (AC)worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the [f](AD)sexually immoral, (AE)homosexuals, [g](AF)slave traders, (AG)liars, (AH)perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (AI)sound teaching, 11 according to (AJ)the glorious gospel of (AK)the blessed God, with which I have been (AL)entrusted.
Paul’s Testimony
12 I thank (AM)Christ Jesus our Lord, who has (AN)strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, (AO)putting me into service, 13 even though I was previously a blasphemer and a (AP)persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was (AQ)shown mercy because (AR)I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the (AS)grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the (AT)faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 (AU)It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that (AV)Christ Jesus came into the world to (AW)save sinners, among whom (AX)I am foremost. 16 Yet for this reason I (AY)found mercy, so that in me as the foremost sinner Jesus Christ might (AZ)demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those [h]who would believe in Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the (BA)King [i]eternal, (BB)immortal, (BC)invisible, the (BD)only God, (BE)be honor and glory [j]forever and ever. Amen.
18 This (BF)command I entrust to you, Timothy, (BG)my [k]son, in accordance with the (BH)prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you (BI)fight the good fight, 19 keeping (BJ)faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to [l](BK)their faith. 20 [m]Among these are (BL)Hymenaeus and (BM)Alexander, whom I have (BN)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (BO)taught not to blaspheme.

Correcting False Teaching
1 Paul, an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Christ Jesus by the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed) our Hope [the fulfillment of our salvation],
2 to Timothy, my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain individuals not to teach any different doctrines, 4 nor to pay attention to legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which give rise to useless speculation and meaningless arguments rather than advancing God’s program of instruction which is grounded in faith [and requires surrendering the entire self to God in absolute trust and confidence]. 5 But the goal of our instruction is love [which springs] from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some individuals have wandered away from these things into empty arguments and useless discussions, 7 wanting to be teachers of the Law [of Moses], even though they do not understand the terms they use or the subjects about which they make [such] confident declarations.
8 Now we know [without any doubt] that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully and appropriately, 9 understanding the fact that law is not enacted for the righteous person [the one in right standing with God], but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for sexually immoral persons, for homosexuals, for [a]kidnappers and slave traders, for liars, for perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has granted me [the needed] strength and made me able for this, because He considered me faithful and trustworthy, putting me into service [for this ministry], 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer [of our Lord] and a persecutor [of His church] and a shameful and outrageous and violent aggressor [toward believers]. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord [His amazing, unmerited favor and blessing] flowed out in superabundance [for me, together] with the faith and love which are [realized] in Christ Jesus. 15 [b]This is a faithful and trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance and approval, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. 16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost [of sinners], Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example or pattern for those who [c]would believe in Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the King of the ages [eternal], immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, so that [inspired and aided] by them you may fight the good fight [in contending with false teachers], 19 keeping your faith [leaning completely on God with absolute trust and confidence in His guidance] and having a good conscience; for some [people] have rejected [their moral compass] and have made a shipwreck of their faith. 20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have [d]handed over to Satan, so that they will be disciplined and taught not to blaspheme.

Prefácio e saudação
1 Paulo, apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, segundo o mandado de Deus, nosso Salvador, e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, esperança nossa, 2 a Timóteo, meu verdadeiro filho na fé: graça, misericórdia e paz, da parte de Deus, nosso Pai, e da de Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor.
As falsas doutrinas e o evangelho da graça. O bom combate
3 Como te roguei, quando parti para a Macedônia, que ficasses em Éfeso, para advertires a alguns que não ensinem outra doutrina, 4 nem se deem a fábulas ou a genealogias intermináveis, que mais produzem questões do que edificação de Deus, que consiste na fé; assim o faço agora. 5 Ora, o fim do mandamento é o amor de um coração puro, e de uma boa consciência, e de uma fé não fingida. 6 Do que desviando-se alguns, se entregaram a vãs contendas, 7 querendo ser doutores da lei e não entendendo nem o que dizem nem o que afirmam.
8 Sabemos, porém, que a lei é boa, se alguém dela usa legitimamente, 9 sabendo isto: que a lei não é feita para o justo, mas para os injustos e obstinados, para os ímpios e pecadores, para os profanos e irreligiosos, para os parricidas e matricidas, para os homicidas, 10 para os fornicadores, para os sodomitas, para os roubadores de homens, para os mentirosos, para os perjuros e para o que for contrário à sã doutrina, 11 conforme o evangelho da glória do Deus bem-aventurado, que me foi confiado.
12 E dou graças ao que me tem confortado, a Cristo Jesus, Senhor nosso, porque me teve por fiel, pondo-me no ministério, 13 a mim, que, dantes, fui blasfemo, e perseguidor, e opressor; mas alcancei misericórdia, porque o fiz ignorantemente, na incredulidade. 14 E a graça de nosso Senhor superabundou com a fé e o amor que há em Jesus Cristo. 15 Esta é uma palavra fiel e digna de toda aceitação: que Cristo Jesus veio ao mundo, para salvar os pecadores, dos quais eu sou o principal. 16 Mas, por isso, alcancei misericórdia, para que em mim, que sou o principal, Jesus Cristo mostrasse toda a sua longanimidade, para exemplo dos que haviam de crer nele para a vida eterna. 17 Ora, ao Rei dos séculos, imortal, invisível, ao único Deus seja honra e glória para todo o sempre. Advertências contra Falsos Mestres da Lei
3 Partindo eu para a Macedônia, roguei-lhe que permanecesse em Éfeso para ordenar a certas pessoas que não mais ensinem doutrinas falsas, 4 e que deixem de dar atenção a mitos e genealogias intermináveis, que causam controvérsias em vez de promoverem a obra de Deus, que é pela fé. 5 O objetivo desta instrução é o amor que procede de um coração puro, de uma boa consciência e de uma fé sincera. 6 Alguns se desviaram dessas coisas, voltando-se para discussões inúteis, 7 querendo ser mestres da lei, quando não compreendem nem o que dizem nem as coisas acerca das quais fazem afirmações tão categóricas.
8 Sabemos que a Lei é boa, se alguém a usa de maneira adequada. 9 Também sabemos que ela não é feita para os justos, mas para os transgressores e insubordinados, para os ímpios e pecadores, para os profanos e irreverentes, para os que matam pai e mãe, para os homicidas, 10 para os que praticam imoralidade sexual e os homossexuais, para os seqüestradores, para os mentirosos e os que juram falsamente; e para todo aquele que se opõe à sã doutrina. 11 Esta sã doutrina se vê no glorioso evangelho que me foi confiado, o evangelho do Deus bendito.
A Graça de Deus Concedida a Paulo
12 Dou graças a Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor, que me deu forças e me considerou fiel, designando-me para o ministério, 13 a mim que anteriormente fui blasfemo, perseguidor e insolente; mas alcancei misericórdia, porque o fiz por ignorância e na minha incredulidade; 14 contudo, a graça de nosso Senhor transbordou sobre mim, com a fé e o amor que estão em Cristo Jesus.
15 Esta afirmação é fiel e digna de toda aceitação: Cristo Jesus veio ao mundo para salvar os pecadores, dos quais eu sou o pior. 16 Mas por isso mesmo alcancei misericórdia, para que em mim, o pior dos pecadores, Cristo Jesus demonstrasse toda a grandeza da sua paciência, usando-me como um exemplo para aqueles que nele haveriam de crer para a vida eterna. 17 Ao Rei eterno, o Deus único, imortal e invisível, sejam honra e glória para todo o sempre. Amém.
18 Timóteo, meu filho, dou-lhe esta instrução, segundo as profecias já proferidas a seu respeito, para que, seguindo-as, você combata o bom combate, 19 mantendo a fé e a boa consciência que alguns rejeitaram e, por isso, naufragaram na fé. 20 Entre eles estão Himeneu e Alexandre, os quais entreguei a Satanás, para que aprendam a não blasfemar.
