The Day of the Lord

But concerning (A)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that (B)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then (C)sudden destruction comes upon them, (D)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (E)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all (F)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. (G)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but (H)let us watch and be [a]sober.

The Day of the Lord

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D) While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(G)

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(I) You are all children of the light(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(K) but let us be awake(L) and sober.(M)

But (A)the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for (B)fire until the day of judgment and [a]perdition of ungodly men.

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (C)a thousand years as one day. (D)The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but (E)is longsuffering toward [b]us, (F)not willing that any should perish but (G)that all should come to repentance.

The Day of the Lord

10 But (H)the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which (I)the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be [c]burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be (J)in holy conduct and godliness, 12 (K)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will (L)be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will (M)melt with fervent heat?

By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(A) being kept for the day of judgment(B) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(C) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(D) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(E) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(F)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(G) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(H) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(I) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](J)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(K) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](L) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(M)
