that each one of you know how to control his own (A)body[a] in holiness and (B)honor, not in (C)the passion of lust (D)like the Gentiles (E)who do not know God; that no one transgress and (F)wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is (G)an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For (H)God has not called us for (I)impurity, but in holiness. Therefore (J)whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, (K)who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Now concerning (L)brotherly love (M)you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been (N)taught by God (O)to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what (P)you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to (Q)do this more and more, 11 and to aspire (R)to live quietly, and (S)to mind your own affairs, and (T)to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may (U)walk properly before (V)outsiders and be dependent on no one.

that each of you should learn to control your own body[a](A) in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust(B) like the pagans,(C) who do not know God;(D) and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.[b](E) The Lord will punish(F) all those who commit such sins,(G) as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.(H) Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.(I)

Now about your love for one another(J) we do not need to write to you,(K) for you yourselves have been taught by God(L) to love each other.(M) 10 And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia.(N) Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,(O) 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands,(P) just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders(Q) and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

  1. 1 Thessalonians 4:4 Or learn to live with your own wife; or learn to acquire a wife
  2. 1 Thessalonians 4:6 The Greek word for brother or sister (adelphos) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family.

That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
