When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. (A)So Saul inquired of the Lord, but (B)the Lord did not answer him, either in (C)dreams, or by the (D)Urim, or by the prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, (E)there is a woman who is a medium at (F)En-dor.”

Then Saul (G)disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, “(H)Consult the spirit for me, please, and (I)bring up for me the one whom I shall [a]name for you.” But the woman said to him, “Behold, you know (J)what Saul has done, that he has eliminated the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you then setting a trap for my life, to bring about my death?” 10 So Saul swore an oath to her by the Lord, saying, “As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” 13 But the king said to her, “Do not be afraid; but what do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a [b]divine being coming up from the earth.” 14 He said to her, “[c]How does he appear?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and (K)he is wrapped in a robe.” Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and (L)he bowed with his face to the ground and paid [d]homage.

15 And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied, “I am very distressed, for the Philistines are waging war against me, and (M)God has abandoned me and (N)no longer answers me, either through prophets or in dreams; therefore I have called you, so that you may let me know what I should do.” 16 Samuel said, “But why ask me, since the Lord has abandoned you and has become your enemy? 17 And the Lord has done [e]just (O)as He spoke through me; for the Lord has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 Just as (P)you did not [f]obey the Lord and did not execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, so the Lord has done this thing to you this day. 19 Furthermore, the Lord will also hand Israel along with you over to the Philistines; so tomorrow (Q)you and your sons will be with me. Indeed, the Lord will hand the army of Israel over to the Philistines!”

When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror(A) filled his heart. He inquired(B) of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams(C) or Urim(D) or prophets.(E) Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium,(F) so I may go and inquire of her.”

“There is one in Endor,(G)” they said.

So Saul disguised(H) himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult(I) a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”

But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off(J) the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap(K) for my life to bring about my death?”

10 Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.”

11 Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”

“Bring up Samuel,” he said.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me?(L) You are Saul!”

13 The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”

The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure[a] coming up out of the earth.”(M)

14 “What does he look like?” he asked.

“An old man wearing a robe(N) is coming up,” she said.

Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”

“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed(O) from me. He no longer answers(P) me, either by prophets or by dreams.(Q) So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”

16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? 17 The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn(R) the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey(S) the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath(T) against the Amalekites,(U) the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons(V) will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
