11 Then Elkanah went home (A)to Ramah. (B)And the boy[a] was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest.

Eli's Worthless Sons

12 Now the sons of Eli were (C)worthless men. (D)They did not know the Lord. 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Moreover, (E)before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” 16 And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.” 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great (F)in the sight of the Lord, (G)for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.

18 (H)Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy (I)clothed with a linen ephod. 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year (J)when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman (K)for the petition she asked of the Lord.” So then they would return to their home.

21 (L)Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. (M)And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.

Eli Rebukes His Sons

22 Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who (N)were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad. 25 If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, (O)for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.

26 Now the boy Samuel (P)continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man.

The Lord Rejects Eli's Household

27 And there came (Q)a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, (R)‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? 28 (S)Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, (T)to wear an ephod before me? (U)I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29 Why then do you (V)scorn[b] my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ 30 Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: (W)‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ (X)but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, (Y)the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 Then (Z)in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, (AA)and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his[c] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants[d] of your house shall die by the sword of men.[e] 34 (AB)And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die (AC)on the same day. 35 (AD)And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. (AE)And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before (AF)my anointed forever. 36 And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, “Please put me in one of the priests' places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

(AG)Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. (AH)And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.

At that time Eli, (AI)whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. (AJ)The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down (AK)in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.

Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.

And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel (AL)at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli (AM)all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 (AN)And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, (AO)because his sons were blaspheming God,[f] (AP)and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli (AQ)that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” 17 And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. (AR)May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, (AS)“It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.”

19 (AT)And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him (AU)and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel (AV)from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. 21 And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel (AW)at Shiloh (AX)by the word of the Lord.

11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,(A) but the boy ministered(B) before the Lord under Eli the priest.

Eli’s Wicked Sons

12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard(C) for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice(D) of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat(E) was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”

16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat(F) be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”

17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[a] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.(G)

18 But Samuel was ministering(H) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.(I) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual(J) sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed(K) for and gave to[b] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;(L) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew(M) up in the presence of the Lord.

22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(N) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(O) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[c] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(P) intercede(Q) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(R) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(S)

Prophecy Against the House of Eli

27 Now a man of God(T) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(U) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(V) and to wear an ephod(W) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(X) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[d] scorn my sacrifice and offering(Y) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(Z) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’

30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(AA)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(AB) but those who despise(AC) me will be disdained.(AD) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(AE) 32 and you will see distress(AF) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(AG) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(AH) will die in the prime of life.

34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(AI) to you—they will both die(AJ) on the same day.(AK) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(AL) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(AM) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(AN) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(AO)”’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

The boy Samuel ministered(AP) before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare;(AQ) there were not many visions.(AR)

One night Eli, whose eyes(AS) were becoming so weak that he could barely see,(AT) was lying down in his usual place. The lamp(AU) of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house(AV) of the Lord, where the ark(AW) of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.(AX) And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

Now Samuel did not yet know(AY) the Lord: The word(AZ) of the Lord had not yet been revealed(BA) to him.

A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!(BB)

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.(BC) 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything(BD) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[e] and he failed to restrain(BE) them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned(BF) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide(BG) it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely,(BH) if you hide from me anything he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”(BI)

19 The Lord was with(BJ) Samuel as he grew(BK) up, and he let none(BL) of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba(BM) recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.(BN) 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed(BO) himself to Samuel through his word.
