34 Then Samuel went to (A)Ramah, but Saul went up to his house at (B)Gibeah of Saul. 35 And (C)Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, though Samuel (D)mourned for [a]Saul. And the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.

Samuel Goes to Bethlehem

16 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “(E)How long are you going to mourn for [b]Saul, since (F)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? (G)Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to (H)Jesse the Bethlehemite, because I have (I)chosen a king for Myself among his sons.” But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “(J)Take a heifer [c]with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ And you shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and (K)I will let you know what you shall do; and (L)you shall anoint for Me the one whom I [d]designate to you.” So Samuel did what the Lord told him, and he came to (M)Bethlehem. Then the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “(N)Do you come in peace?” And he said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. (O)Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they entered, he looked at (P)Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lords anointed is standing before Him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for [e]God does not see as man sees, since man looks at [f]the outward appearance, (Q)but the Lord looks at the heart.” Then Jesse called (R)Abinadab and had him pass before Samuel. But he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one, either.” Next Jesse had [g](S)Shammah pass by. And he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one, either.” 10 So Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the boys?” And he said, “(T)The youngest is still left, but behold, he is tending the sheep.” So Samuel said to Jesse, “Send word and bring him; for we will not take our places at the table until he comes here.”

David Anointed

12 So he sent word and brought him in. Now he was [h]reddish, with (U)beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the Lord said, “(V)Arise, anoint him; for this is he.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and (W)anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and (X)the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(A) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(B) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(C) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(D) for him. And the Lord regretted(E) that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn(F) for Saul, since I have rejected(G) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil(H) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse(I) of Bethlehem. I have chosen(J) one of his sons to be king.”

But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show(K) you what to do. You are to anoint(L) for me the one I indicate.”

Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem,(M) the elders of the town trembled(N) when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?(O)

Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(P) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(Q) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(R) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(S)

Then Jesse called Abinadab(T) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Jesse then had Shammah(U) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(V) the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(W)

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he(X) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(Y) features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(Z) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(AA) came powerfully upon David.(AB) Samuel then went to Ramah.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

16 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
