2 Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did in opposing the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt. 3 Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
4 So Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand soldiers of Judah. 5 Saul came to the city of the Amalekites and lay in wait in the valley. 6 Saul said to the Kenites, “Go! Leave! Withdraw from among the Amalekites, or I will destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites withdrew from the Amalekites. 7 Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 He took King Agag of the Amalekites alive, but utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and of the cattle and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was valuable, and would not utterly destroy them; all that was despised and worthless they utterly destroyed.
Saul Rejected as King
10 The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not carried out my commands.” Samuel was angry; and he cried out to the Lord all night. 12 Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, and Samuel was told, “Saul went to Carmel, where he set up a monument for himself, and on returning he passed on down to Gilgal.” 13 When Samuel came to Saul, Saul said to him, “May you be blessed by the Lord; I have carried out the command of the Lord.” 14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears, and the lowing of cattle that I hear?” 15 Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the cattle, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; but the rest we have utterly destroyed.” 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” He replied, “Speak.”
17 Samuel said, “Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20 Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But from the spoil the people took sheep and cattle, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22 And Samuel said,
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obedience to the voice of the Lord?
Surely, to obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is no less a sin than divination,
and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has also rejected you from being king.”
24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray, pardon my sin, and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord.” 26 Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. 28 And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this very day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 Moreover the Glory of Israel will not recant[a] or change his mind; for he is not a mortal, that he should change his mind.” 30 Then Saul[b] said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul; and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” And Agag came to him haltingly.[c] Agag said, “Surely this is the bitterness of death.”[d] 33 But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so your mother shall be childless among women.”
And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.

2 Così parla il Signore degli eserciti: “Io ricordo ciò che Amalec fece a Israele quando gli si oppose nel viaggio mentre saliva dall’Egitto. 3 Ora va’, sconfiggi Amalec, vota allo sterminio tutto ciò che gli appartiene; non lo risparmiare, ma uccidi uomini e donne, bambini e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini”».
4 Saul dunque convocò il popolo e ne fece la rassegna a Telaim: erano duecentomila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda.
5 Saul giunse alla città di Amalec, pose un’imboscata nella valle 6 e disse ai Chenei: «Andatevene, ritiratevi, allontanatevi dagli Amalechiti, perché io non vi distrugga insieme a loro; infatti voi vi comportaste amichevolmente verso tutti i figli d’Israele quando salirono dall’Egitto». Così i Chenei si ritirarono dagli Amalechiti.
7 Saul sconfisse gli Amalechiti da Avila fino a Sur, che sta di fronte all’Egitto; 8 prese vivo Agag, re degli Amalechiti, e votò allo sterminio tutto il popolo, passandolo a fil di spada. 9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e il meglio delle pecore, dei buoi e degli animali della seconda figliatura, gli agnelli e tutto quel che c’era di buono; non vollero votarli allo sterminio, ma votarono allo sterminio ogni cosa senza valore e inutile.
10 (A)Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Samuele, dicendo: 11 «Io mi pento di avere stabilito Saul re, perché si è allontanato da me e non ha eseguito i miei ordini». Samuele ne fu irritato e gridò al Signore tutta la notte. 12 Poi si alzò la mattina di buon’ora e andò a incontrare Saul; ma vennero a dire a Samuele: «Saul è andato a Carmel, e là si è fatto un monumento; poi se n’è ritornato e, passando da un’altra parte, è sceso a Ghilgal». 13 Samuele andò da Saul; e Saul gli disse: «Il Signore ti benedica! Ho eseguito l’ordine del Signore». 14 Samuele disse: «Che cos’è dunque questo belar di pecore che mi giunge agli orecchi e questo muggire di buoi che sento?» 15 Saul rispose: «Sono bestie condotte dal paese degli Amalechiti; perché il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e dei buoi per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio; il resto, però, l’abbiamo votato allo sterminio». 16 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Basta! Io ti annuncerò quel che il Signore mi ha detto stanotte». Saul gli disse: «Parla».
17 Samuele disse: «Non è forse vero che quando ti consideravi piccolo sei diventato capo delle tribù d’Israele, e il Signore ti ha unto re d’Israele? 18 Il Signore ti aveva affidato una missione, dicendo: “Va’, vota allo sterminio quei peccatori degli Amalechiti, e fa’ loro guerra finché siano sterminati”. 19 Perché dunque non hai ubbidito alla voce del Signore? Perché ti sei gettato sul bottino e hai fatto ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore?» 20 Saul disse a Samuele: «Ma io ho ubbidito alla voce del Signore, ho compiuto la missione che il Signore mi aveva affidata, ho condotto qui Agag, re di Amalec, e ho votato allo sterminio gli Amalechiti; 21 ma il popolo ha preso, fra il bottino, delle pecore e dei buoi come primizie di ciò che doveva essere sterminato, per farne dei sacrifici al Signore, al tuo Dio, a Ghilgal». 22 Samuele disse: «Il Signore gradisce forse gli olocausti e i sacrifici quanto l’ubbidire alla sua voce? No, l’ubbidire è meglio del sacrificio, dare ascolto vale più che il grasso dei montoni; 23 infatti la ribellione è come il peccato della divinazione, e l’ostinatezza è come l’adorazione degli idoli e degli dèi domestici[a]. Poiché tu hai rigettato la parola del Signore, anch’egli ti rigetta come re».
24 Allora Saul disse a Samuele: «Ho peccato, perché ho trasgredito il comandamento del Signore e le tue parole, perché ho temuto il popolo e ho dato ascolto alla sua voce. 25 Ti prego dunque, perdona il mio peccato, ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore». 26 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: «Non ritornerò con te, poiché hai rigettato la parola del Signore e il Signore ha rigettato te perché tu non regni più sopra Israele». 27 Come Samuele si voltava per andarsene, Saul lo prese per il lembo del mantello, che si strappò. 28 Allora Samuele gli disse: «Il Signore strappa oggi di dosso a te il regno d’Israele e lo dà a un altro, migliore di te. 29 Colui che è la gloria d’Israele non mentirà e non si pentirà; egli infatti non è un uomo perché debba pentirsi». 30 Allora Saul disse: «Ho peccato; ma tu adesso onorami, ti prego, in presenza degli anziani del mio popolo e in presenza d’Israele; ritorna con me e mi prostrerò davanti al Signore, al tuo Dio».
31 Samuele dunque ritornò, seguendo Saul, e Saul si prostrò davanti al Signore. 32 Poi Samuele disse: «Conducetemi qui Agag, re degli Amalechiti». Agag andò da lui fiducioso[b], pensando: «Certo, l’amarezza della morte è passata». 33 Samuele gli disse: «Come la tua spada ha privato le donne di figli, così tua madre sarà privata di figli fra le donne». E Samuele fece squartare Agag in presenza del Signore a Ghilgal.
34 Poi Samuele andò a Rama e Saul salì a casa sua, a Ghibea di Saul.

2 So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen: Ich will strafen, was Amalek an Israel tat, indem er sich ihm in den Weg stellte, als es aus Ägypten heraufzog.
3 So ziehe nun hin und schlage Amalek, und vollstrecke den Bann an allem, was er hat, und schone ihn nicht; sondern töte Männer und Frauen, Kinder und Säuglinge, Rinder und Schafe, Kamele und Esel!
4 Da bot Saul das Volk auf und musterte sie bei Telaim, etwa 200 000 Mann Fußvolk und 10 000 Mann aus Juda.
5 Und Saul kam zu der Stadt Amaleks und legte einen Hinterhalt im Tal.
6 Und Saul ließ den Kenitern sagen: Geht fort, weicht, zieht weg aus der Mitte der Amalekiter, damit ich euch nicht mit ihnen aufreibe; denn ihr habt Gnade an allen Kindern Israels erwiesen, als sie aus Ägypten heraufzogen! So zogen die Keniter aus der Mitte von Amalek weg.
7 Da schlug Saul Amalek, von Hewila an bis nach Schur, das östlich von Ägypten liegt,
8 und er nahm Agag, den König von Amalek, lebendig gefangen; dagegen vollstreckte er den Bann an dem ganzen Volk mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.
9 Aber Saul und das Volk verschonten Agag und die besten Schafe und Rinder und das Vieh vom zweiten Wurf[a] und die Mastschafe und alles, was wertvoll war, und sie wollten den Bann an ihnen nicht vollstrecken; alles Vieh aber, das wertlos und schwächlich war, an dem vollstreckten sie den Bann.
10 Da erging das Wort des Herrn an Samuel folgendermaßen:
11 Es reut mich, dass ich Saul zum König gemacht habe; denn er hat sich von mir abgewandt und meine Worte nicht erfüllt! Darüber entbrannte Samuel, und er schrie zum Herrn die ganze Nacht.
12 Und Samuel machte sich früh auf, um Saul am Morgen zu begegnen. Und es wurde dem Samuel berichtet: Saul ist nach Karmel gekommen, und siehe, er hat sich ein Denkmal aufgerichtet; danach hat er eine Schwenkung gemacht, ist hinübergezogen und nach Gilgal hinabgestiegen.
13 Als nun Samuel zu Saul kam, sprach Saul zu ihm: Gesegnet seist du vom Herrn! Ich habe das Wort des Herrn erfüllt!
14 Samuel aber antwortete: Und was ist das für ein Blöken von Schafen in meinen Ohren, und Brüllen von Rindern, das ich da höre?
15 Und Saul sprach: Man hat sie von den Amalekitern hergebracht; denn das Volk verschonte die besten Schafe und Rinder, um sie dem Herrn, deinem Gott, zu opfern; an dem Übrigen haben wir den Bann vollstreckt!
16 Samuel aber antwortete dem Saul: Halte still, und ich will dir sagen, was der Herr diese Nacht zu mir geredet hat! Da sprach er zu ihm: Rede!
17 Und Samuel sprach: Ist es nicht so, als du klein warst in deinen Augen, wurdest du das Haupt der Stämme Israels, und der Herr salbte dich zum König über Israel?
18 Und der Herr sandte dich auf den Weg und sprach: Zieh hin und vollstrecke den Bann an den Sündern, an den Amalekitern, und bekämpfe sie, bis du sie ausgerottet hast!
19 Warum hast du denn der Stimme des Herrn nicht gehorcht, sondern bist über die Beute hergefallen und hast getan, was böse ist in den Augen des Herrn?
20 Und Saul antwortete dem Samuel: Ich habe doch der Stimme des Herrn gehorcht und bin den Weg gezogen, den mich der Herr sandte, und habe Agag, den König von Amalek, hergebracht und an den Amalekitern den Bann vollstreckt!
21 Aber das Volk hat von der Beute genommen, Schafe und Rinder, das Beste des Gebannten, um es dem Herrn, deinem Gott, in Gilgal zu opfern!
22 Samuel aber sprach zu Saul: Hat der Herr dasselbe Wohlgefallen an Schlachtopfern und Brandopfern wie daran, dass man der Stimme des Herrn gehorcht? Siehe, Gehorsam ist besser als Schlachtopfer und Folgsamkeit[b] besser als das Fett von Widdern!
23 Denn Ungehorsam ist [wie] die Sünde der Wahrsagerei, und Widerspenstigkeit ist [wie] Abgötterei und Götzendienst.[c] Weil du nun das Wort des Herrn verworfen hast, so hat er dich verworfen, dass du nicht mehr König sein sollst!
24 Da sprach Saul zu Samuel: Ich habe gesündigt, dass ich den Befehl des Herrn und deine Worte übertreten habe; denn ich fürchtete das Volk und gehorchte seiner Stimme!
25 Nun aber vergib mir doch meine Sünde und kehre mit mir um, damit ich den Herrn anbete!
26 Samuel sprach zu Saul: Ich will nicht mit dir umkehren; denn du hast das Wort des Herrn verworfen, und der Herr hat dich verworfen, dass du nicht mehr König über Israel sein sollst!
27 Und Samuel wandte sich ab und wollte gehen; da ergriff er ihn beim Zipfel seines Obergewandes, sodass dieser abriss.
28 Da sprach Samuel zu ihm: Der Herr hat heute das Königreich Israel von dir abgerissen und es deinem Nächsten gegeben, der besser ist als du!
29 Auch lügt der Ruhm Israels nicht, es reut ihn auch nicht; denn er ist kein Mensch, dass er etwas bereuen müsste!
30 Er aber sprach: Ich habe gesündigt; nun aber ehre mich doch vor den Ältesten meines Volkes und vor Israel und kehre mit mir um, damit ich den Herrn, deinen Gott, anbete!
31 Da kehrte Samuel um und folgte Saul, und Saul betete den Herrn an.
32 Samuel aber sprach: Bringt Agag, den König von Amalek, zu mir her! Und Agag kam gebunden zu ihm. Und Agag sprach: Fürwahr, die Bitterkeit des Todes ist gewichen!
33 Samuel sprach: Wie dein Schwert Frauen ihrer Kinder beraubt hat, so soll auch deine Mutter ihrer Kinder beraubt werden vor allen Frauen! Und Samuel hieb Agag in Stücke vor dem Herrn in Gilgal.
34 Und Samuel ging nach Rama; Saul aber zog in sein Haus hinauf, nach dem Gibea Sauls.

4 Saul összegyűjtötte és megszemlélte seregét Teláimban. Júdából 10 000 fő, a többi törzsből pedig 200 000 gyalogos katona gyűlt össze. 5 Elindultak, és az amálekiek városa közelében, a völgyben lesben álltak. 6 Saul megüzente a kénieknek: „Távozzatok el innen, menjetek ki az amálekiek közül, hogy ne pusztítsalak el titeket is velük együtt, mert ti jóindulattal bántatok Izráel népével, mikor kijött Egyiptomból!” A kéniek el is mentek onnan.
7 Ezután Saul megtámadta az amálekieket, és vágta őket Havilától egészen a Súrba vezető útig, amely Egyiptom határa mellett fekszik. 8 Foglyul ejtette Agágot, az amálekiek királyát is, annak népét pedig mind kardélre hányta. 9 Saul és serege azonban életben hagyta Agágot, és az állatok közül is csak a hitványabbját pusztították el. A legszebb juhokat, kecskéket, marhákat, a hízott állatokat és a bárányokat megkímélték.
Saul és Sámuel utolsó találkozása
10 Ezután az Örökkévaló szólt Sámuelnek: 11 „Már bánom, hogy Sault királlyá tettem, mert hátat fordított nekem: nem végezte el, amit parancsoltam neki.” Sámuel ezen annyira felháborodott, hogy egész éjjel kiáltott az Örökkévalóhoz.
12 Másnap azonban már korán reggel Saulhoz indult. Közben megtudta, hogy Saul elment Kármelbe, hogy ott emlékoszlopot állítson magának, majd utána továbbment Gilgálba.
Sámuel elment Saulhoz, aki éppen égőáldozatot mutatott be az Örökkévalónak, abból a zsákmányból, amelyet az amálekiektől szerzett.[a]
13 Amikor Sámuel megérkezett, Saul köszöntötte: „Áldjon meg téged az Örökkévaló! Teljesítettem, amit az Örökkévaló parancsolt.”
14 „Akkor miféle juhbégetést hallok a táborban, s mit jelent ez a marhabőgés, amely most is hallatszik?” — kérdezte Sámuel.
15 „Ezeket az állatokat a katonák zsákmányolták az amálekiektől. A színe-javát megkímélték, hogy Istenednek, az Örökkévalónak áldozzuk a legszebb juhokat és marhákat. De a többit tényleg mind elpusztítottuk” — válaszolta Saul.
16 „Ugyan hagyd ezt! — vágott közbe Sámuel. — Hadd mondjam el, mit mondott nekem az Örökkévaló a múlt éjjel.”
„Mit mondott?” — kérdezte Saul.
17 Sámuel ezt válaszolta: „Látod, az Örökkévaló Izráel királyává tett téged, Izráel törzseinek a vezetője lettél, pedig milyen kicsinek és jelentéktelennek érezted magad! 18 Az Örökkévaló bízott meg azzal, hogy indulj el, és harcolj az amálekiek ellen, amíg teljesen ki nem pusztítod ezt a gonosz népet! 19 Miért nem hajtottad végre az Örökkévaló parancsát? Miért vettél el a zsákmányból? Miért tettél olyat, amit az Örökkévaló rossznak tart?”
20 „De hiszen én engedelmeskedtem az Örökkévalónak! — védekezett Saul. — Teljesítettem, amivel megbízott, és teljesen elpusztítottam az amálekieket! Csak egyvalakit kíméltem meg: Agágot, a királyukat. 21 A katonáim nem ölték le az összes zsákmányolt állatot, ahogy kellett volna, hanem megkímélték a színe-javát, hogy feláldozzák Istenednek, az Örökkévalónak itt, Gilgálban.”
22 Sámuel azonban így felelt:
„Vajon örömmel fogad-e az Örökkévaló égőáldozatot és véresáldozatot
engedelmesség helyett?
Bizony, inkább kívánja, hogy szavát megfogadd,
mint a sok-sok áldozatot!
Jobb, ha engedelmesen követed parancsát,
mint ha kosok kövérjét áldozod neki!
23 Mert az engedetlenség bűne, olyan mint a varázslás,
és az ellenszegülés, mint a bálványimádás!
Félretoltad az Örökkévaló szavát,
ezért ő is félretett téged,
s a királyságot elvette tőled.”
24 Saul elismerte: „Vétkeztem az Örökkévaló ellen, mert megszegtem parancsát, és nem azt tettem, amit mondtál nekem. De csak azért, mert féltem a néptől, és engedtem szavuknak. 25 Most azonban, kérlek, bocsáss meg, és jöjj velem vissza, hogy leboruljak az Örökkévaló előtt.”
26 „Nem megyek! — válaszolta Sámuel. — Elutasítottad az Örökkévaló szavát, ezért ő is elutasított téged, s a királyságot elvette tőled.” 27 Azzal sarkon fordult, hogy elmenjen. De Saul megragadta Sámuel köpenyét, amely így elszakadt. 28 „Látod, az Örökkévaló is így szakította el tőled a mai napon Izráel királyságát — mondta ekkor Sámuel —, és olyannak adta, aki különb nálad. 29 Izráel Istene, az Örökkévaló nem hazudik, és nem vonja vissza, amit mondott. Nem olyan ő, mint az emberek, hogy meggondolja magát.”
30 Saul tovább kérlelte: „Igaz, hogy vétkeztem, de kérlek, ne szégyeníts meg a népem vezetői és egész Izráel előtt! Jöjj velem vissza, hogy leboruljak Istened, az Örökkévaló előtt!” 31 Sámuel végül engedett neki, és Saullal együtt tért vissza a vezetőkhöz. Saul pedig leborult az Örökkévaló előtt.
32 Azután Sámuel ezt mondta: „Vezessétek elém Agágot, az amálekiek királyát!”
Elővezették a megkötözött Agágot, aki azt gondolta: „Biztosan nem fognak megölni!”[b]
33 Sámuel így szólította meg: „Ahogy a te kardod megfosztotta gyermekeiktől az anyákat, úgy legyen a te anyád is gyermektelenné!” Azzal fogta a kardját, és darabokra vagdalta Agágot az Örökkévaló jelenlétében, Gilgálban.
34 Ezután Sámuel hazament Rámába, és Saul is hazatért Gibeába.
