Saul’s Foolish Order

²⁴ Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had ^(A)put the people under oath, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food ^[a]before evening, and until I have avenged myself on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

⁴⁴ Saul said, “^(A)May God do ^[a]this to me and more also, for ^(B)you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

⁵ Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this ^[a](A)deserves to die.
