10 Then Samuel took a flask^(A) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed^(B) you ruler over his inheritance?^[a](C)

³ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show^(A) you what to do. You are to anoint^(B) for me the one I indicate.”

¹² So he^(A) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome^(B) features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

³ When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant^(A) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed^(B) David king over Israel.

¹⁶ Also, anoint^(A) Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha^(B) son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah^(C) to succeed you as prophet.

³ Then take the flask and pour the oil^(A) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”
