Israël wil een koning
8 Toen Samuël erg oud was geworden, trok hij zich terug en benoemde zijn zonen als richters. 2 Joël en Abia, zijn oudste zonen, spraken recht in Berseba, 3 maar zij volgden niet het voorbeeld van hun vader. Zij lieten zich omkopen, deden onrechtvaardige uitspraken en waren uit op eigen gewin.
4 Ten slotte kwamen de leiders van Israël in Rama bijeen om deze zaak met Samuël te bespreken. 5 Zij vertelden hem dat er veel was veranderd sinds hij zich had teruggetrokken, omdat zijn zonen slechte mannen waren. ‘Geef ons een koning, net als de andere volken,’ pleitten zij. 6 Samuël was geschokt dat het volk een koning wilde en wendde zich tot de Here om raad. 7 ‘Doe wat zij u vragen,’ antwoordde de Here, ‘want zij wijzen niet u af, maar Mij. Zij willen niet dat Ik nog langer hun Koning ben. 8 Al vanaf het moment dat Ik hen uit Egypte wegleidde, hebben zij Mij telkens weer afgewezen en zijn andere goden gevolgd. En nu behandelen zij u op dezelfde wijze. 9 Doe wat zij vragen, maar waarschuw hen wel voor de gevolgen van een koning die over hen zal heersen!’
10 Samuël vertelde het volk wat de Here hem had gezegd: 11 ‘U staat erop een koning te hebben? Laat mij u dan vertellen welke privileges die koning zal hebben. Uw zonen zullen dienstplichtig worden en voor hem dienst doen als bestuurders van strijdwagens, ruiters en voetknechten. 12 Ze zullen gevechtseenheden moeten aanvoeren als er oorlog komt en worden gedwongen de koninklijke akkers te ploegen en de oogst binnen te halen. Ook zullen ze zijn wapens en strijdwagens moeten maken. 13 Hij zal uw dochters van u afnemen en hen dwingen aan zijn hof voor hem te koken en te bakken en parfums te maken. 14 Hij zal u uw beste stukken land, wijngaarden en olijfgaarden afnemen en die aan zijn personeel geven. 15 Hij zal een tiende deel van uw oogst nemen en ook dat verdelen onder zijn personeel. 16 Uw slaven en uw beste knechten en dienaren zal hij u afnemen en uw vee zal hij voor zijn eigen gebruik opeisen. 17 Hij zal een tiende deel van uw kudde in beslag nemen en u zult zijn slaven worden. 18 U zult bitter klagen over die koning die u nu verlangt, maar de Here zal niet naar u luisteren.’
19 Maar de Israëlieten sloegen Samuëls waarschuwingen in de wind. ‘Ook al zou dat gebeuren, we willen toch een koning,’ zeiden zij. 20 ‘Want wij willen net zo zijn als de volken om ons heen. Hij zal ons regeren en onze aanvoerder zijn bij een oorlog.’ 21 Samuël bracht de woorden van het volk over aan de Here. 22 En de Here antwoordde opnieuw: ‘Doe wat zij u vragen en stel een koning over hen aan.’ Daarna stuurde Samuël de mannen terug naar hun woonplaatsen.

Het volk vraagt aan Samuel om een koning
8 Toen Samuel oud geworden was, maakte hij zijn zonen leiders van Israël. 2 Zijn oudste zoon heette Joël, zijn tweede zoon Abia. Ze leidden Israël in Berseba. 3 Maar ze leefden niet zoals Samuel. Ze probeerden vooral om rijk te worden. Ze lieten zich omkopen en waren onrechtvaardige rechters. 4 Daarom gingen de leiders van de stammen van Israël met elkaar naar Samuel in Rama. 5 Ze zeiden tegen hem: "U bent oud geworden en uw zonen leven niet zoals u. Geef ons alstublieft een koning om ons te leiden, net als de andere volken hebben."
6 Samuel was het er niet mee eens dat ze een koning wilden hebben. Hij bad erover tot de Heer. 7 De Heer zei tegen Samuel: "Luister naar het volk en doe wat ze van je vragen. Want ze hebben niet jou aan de kant geschoven, maar Mij. Ze willen Mij niet als Koning hebben. 8 Ze zijn nog niets veranderd sinds de dag dat Ik hen uit Egypte bevrijdde. Nog steeds willen ze liever andere goden dienen dan Mij. En zo doen ze nu ook met jou. 9 Doe wat ze vragen, maar waarschuw hen ernstig. Vertel hun wat een koning zal doen als hij over hen heerst."
10 Samuel ging naar de mensen die hem om een koning hadden gevraagd. Hij vertelde hun alles wat de Heer tegen hem had gezegd. 11 Hij zei: "Dit zal een koning doen als hij over jullie heerst: hij zal jullie zonen in dienst nemen bij zijn strijdwagens en paarden. En ze zullen voor zijn wagen uit lopen. 12 Ze zullen aanvoerders in zijn leger moeten worden, over duizend en over vijftig mannen. Ze zullen zijn akkers moeten ploegen en zijn oogsten binnenhalen. Ze zullen zijn wapens en zijn strijdwagens moeten maken. 13 Jullie dochters zullen voor hem moeten koken en bakken. Ze zullen zijn zalven moeten maken. 14 Hij zal jullie je beste akkers, beste wijngaarden en beste olijfbomen afnemen en aan zijn dienaren geven. 15 Hij zal een tiende deel van jullie graan en wijn nemen en aan zijn hofdienaren geven. 16 Hij zal jullie slaven, slavinnen, de beste jongemannen en de beste ezels meenemen en voor zich laten werken. 17 Hij zal een tiende deel van jullie schapen en geiten van jullie afnemen. En jullie zullen hem dienen. 18 Jullie zullen tot de Heer jammeren en klagen over de koning die jullie wilden hebben. Maar de Heer zal dan niet naar jullie luisteren."
19 Maar ze wilden niet naar Samuel luisteren. Ze zeiden: "Nee, we willen écht een koning hebben. 20 Dan zullen we net zo zijn als de andere volken. Onze koning zal ons leiden. Hij zal voorop gaan in onze oorlogen. Hij zal voor ons strijden." 21 Samuel vertelde hun antwoord aan de Heer. 22 De Heer antwoordde: "Doe wat ze van je vragen en geef hun een koning." Toen stuurde Samuel hen allemaal naar huis terug.

Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) 3 But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.
4 So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)”
19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
