The Death of Saul

31 (A)Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain (B)on Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down (C)Jonathan and (D)Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. (E)The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. (F)Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these (G)uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, (H)for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword (I)and fell upon it. And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together. And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, (J)to carry the good news (K)to the house of their idols and to the people. 10 (L)They put his armor in the temple of (M)Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of (N)Beth-shan. 11 (O)But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 (P)all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh (Q)and burned them there. 13 And they took their bones (R)and buried them under (S)the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and (T)fasted seven days.

David Hears of Saul's Death

After the death of Saul, when David had returned (U)from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. And on the third day, behold, (V)a man came from Saul's camp, (W)with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, (X)he fell to the ground and paid homage. David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” And David said to him, (Y)“How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” And the young man who told him said, (Z)“By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ And he said to me, (AA)‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. (AB)And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and (AC)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept (AD)and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” 14 David said to him, “How is it you were not (AE)afraid to put out your hand to destroy (AF)the Lord's anointed?” 15 Then (AG)David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, (AH)“Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed (AI)the Lord's anointed.’”

David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan

17 And David (AJ)lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it[a] should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in (AK)the Book of Jashar.[b] He said:

19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!
    (AL)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (AM)Tell it not in Gath,
(AN)publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
(AO)lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of (AP)the uncircumcised exult.

21 (AQ)“You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
    nor fields of offerings![c]
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, not (AR)anointed with oil.

22 “From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
(AS)the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
    In life and in death they were not divided;
they were (AT)swifter than eagles;
    they were (AU)stronger than lions.

24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
(AV)who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

25 (AW)“How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!

“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
26     I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
(AX)your love to me was extraordinary,
    surpassing the love of women.

27 (AY)“How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!”

David Anointed King of Judah

After this David (AZ)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To (BA)Hebron.” So David went up there, and (BB)his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David brought up (BC)his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David (BD)king over the house of Judah.

When they told David, (BE)“It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, (BF)“May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and (BG)the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Saul Takes His Life(A)

31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.(B) The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons,(C) and they killed his sons Jonathan,(D) Abinadab and Malki-Shua.(E) The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded(F) him critically.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through,(G) or these uncircumcised(H) fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died(I) together that same day.

When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

The next day, when the Philistines(J) came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news(K) in the temple of their idols and among their people.(L) 10 They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(M) and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.(N)

11 When the people of Jabesh Gilead(O) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men(P) marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned(Q) them. 13 Then they took their bones(R) and buried them under a tamarisk(S) tree at Jabesh, and they fasted(T) seven days.(U)

David Hears of Saul’s Death(V)

After the death(W) of Saul, David returned from striking down(X) the Amalekites(Y) and stayed in Ziklag two days. On the third day a man(Z) arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head.(AA) When he came to David, he fell(AB) to the ground to pay him honor.(AC)

“Where have you come from?” David asked him.

He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.”

“What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”

“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”

Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

“I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,(AD)” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’

“He asked me, ‘Who are you?’

“‘An Amalekite,(AE)’ I answered.

“Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me!(AF) I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’

10 “So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown(AG) that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore(AH) them. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

13 David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?”

“I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,(AI)” he answered.

14 David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?(AJ)

15 Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!”(AK) So he struck him down, and he died.(AL) 16 For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head.(AM) Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan

17 David took up this lament(AN) concerning Saul and his son Jonathan,(AO) 18 and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):(AP)

19 “A gazelle[a] lies slain on your heights, Israel.
    How the mighty(AQ) have fallen!(AR)

20 “Tell it not in Gath,(AS)
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,(AT)
lest the daughters of the Philistines(AU) be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.(AV)

21 “Mountains of Gilboa,(AW)
may you have neither dew(AX) nor rain,(AY)
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.[b](AZ)
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.(BA)

22 “From the blood(BB) of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow(BC) of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23 Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,(BD)
    they were stronger than lions.(BE)

24 “Daughters of Israel,
    weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.(BF)

25 “How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve(BG) for you, Jonathan(BH) my brother;(BI)
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,(BJ)
more wonderful than that of women.

27 “How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!”(BK)

David Anointed King Over Judah

In the course of time, David inquired(BL) of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The Lord said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,”(BM) the Lord answered.

So David went up there with his two wives,(BN) Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail,(BO) the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David also took the men who were with him,(BP) each with his family, and they settled in Hebron(BQ) and its towns. Then the men of Judah came to Hebron,(BR) and there they anointed(BS) David king over the tribe of Judah.

When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead(BT) who had buried Saul, he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless(BU) you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,(BV) and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. Now then, be strong(BW) and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
