³¹ The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,^(A)

¹⁷ Then the king ordered the guards at his side: “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.”

But the king’s officials were unwilling^(A) to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.

¹⁸ The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”^(B) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.^{(C) 19} He also put to the sword^(D) Nob,^(E) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.

²⁰ But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,^(F) named Abiathar,^(G) escaped and fled to join David.^(H)

¹⁰ “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray^(A) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.^(B)

²¹ “Son of man, I have broken the arm^(A) of Pharaoh^(B) king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed^(C) or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword. ²² Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt.^(D) I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.^{(E) 23} I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.^{(F) 24} I will strengthen^(G) the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword^(H) in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan^(I) before him like a mortally wounded man.
