²¹ When he taunted^(A) Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah,^(B) David’s brother, killed him.

³² But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “My lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar.

³ Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah,^(A) David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man.

²⁸ When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger^(A) at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

⁶ When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab^(A) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,^(B) but the Lord looks at the heart.”^(C)

⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab^(D) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” ⁹ Jesse then had Shammah^(E) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.”
