Tending the Flock of God
5 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2 to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,[a] not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it[b]—not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3 Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 5 In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders.[c] And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8 Discipline yourselves; keep alert.[d] Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters[e] throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 10 And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings and Benediction
12 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you, and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. 13 Your sister church[f] in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Recommandations aux responsables dans l’Eglise et aux croyants
5 C’est pour cela que j’adresse quelques recommandations à ceux parmi vous qui sont responsables de l’Eglise. Je leur parle en tant que responsable comme eux et témoin des souffrances de Christ, moi qui ai aussi part à la gloire qui va être révélée. 2 Prenez soin du troupeau de Dieu qui vous a été confié. Faites-le, non comme si vous y étiez contraints, mais par dévouement, comme Dieu le désire ; non pas pour de honteuses raisons financières, mais de plein gré ; 3 et n’exercez pas un pouvoir autoritaire sur ceux qui ont été confiés à vos soins, mais soyez les modèles du troupeau. 4 Alors, quand le Berger en chef paraîtra, vous recevrez la couronne de gloire qui ne perdra jamais sa beauté.
5 Vous de même, jeunes gens, soumettez-vous aux responsables de l’Eglise. Et vous tous, dans vos relations mutuelles, revêtez-vous d’humilité, car l’Ecriture déclare : Dieu s’oppose aux orgueilleux, mais il accorde sa grâce aux humbles[a]. 6 Tenez-vous donc humblement sous la main puissante de Dieu, pour qu’il vous élève au moment fixé par lui 7 et déchargez-vous sur lui de tous vos soucis, car il prend soin de vous.
Encouragements
8 Faites preuve de modération et soyez vigilants. Votre adversaire, le diable, rôde autour de vous comme un lion rugissant, qui cherche quelqu’un à dévorer. 9 Résistez-lui en demeurant fermes dans votre foi, car vous savez que vos frères et sœurs dispersés à travers le monde connaissent les mêmes souffrances. 10 Mais quand vous aurez souffert un peu de temps, Dieu, l’auteur de toute grâce, qui vous a appelés à connaître sa gloire éternelle dans l’union à Jésus-Christ, vous rétablira lui-même ; il vous affermira, vous fortifiera et vous rendra inébranlables.
11 A lui appartient la puissance pour toujours. Amen !
Salutations
12 Je vous ai écrit assez brièvement par la main de Silvain, ce frère fidèle, pour vous encourager et vous assurer que c’est bien à la véritable grâce de Dieu que vous êtes attachés.
13 Recevez les salutations de l’Eglise qui est à Babylone[b] et que Dieu a choisie. Mon fils Marc[c] vous envoie aussi ses salutations.
14 Donnez-vous, les uns aux autres, le baiser fraternel. Paix à vous tous qui êtes unis à Christ.

Cette désignation du lieu de séjour de l’Eglise souligne que le peuple de Dieu vit en exil parmi les païens, de même que les Juifs l’ont été après leur déportation à Babylone au vie siècle av. J.-C.
- 5.13 Jean-Marc, neveu de Barnabas, auteur de l’Evangile selon Marc (voir Ac 12.12, 25 ; 13.13 ; 15.37-39 ; Col 4.10 ; Phm 24). Le mot fils indique des liens très forts entre les deux hommes : Marc devait être un disciple de Pierre et peut-être un proche collaborateur. Cela peut aussi indiquer qu’il avait été amené à la foi par Pierre (comparer 1 Tm 1.2 ; Tt 1.4).

To the Elders and the Flock
5 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(A) and a witness(B) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(C) 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock(D) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(E) not pursuing dishonest gain,(F) but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over(G) those entrusted to you, but being examples(H) to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd(I) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(J) that will never fade away.(K)
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(L) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(M) toward one another, because,
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(O) 7 Cast all your anxiety on him(P) because he cares for you.(Q)
8 Be alert and of sober mind.(R) Your enemy the devil prowls around(S) like a roaring lion(T) looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him,(U) standing firm in the faith,(V) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(W)
