End-Time Ethics

The end of all things is near;(A) therefore, be alert and sober-minded(B) for prayer. Above all, maintain constant love(C) for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.[a](D) Be hospitable(E) to one another without complaining. 10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others,(F) as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides,(G) so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

Christian Suffering

12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you.(H) 13 Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ,(I) so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.(J) 14 If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ,(K) you are blessed, because the Spirit(L) of glory and of God[b] rests on you. 15 Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.[c] 16 But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name.[d] 17 For the time has come for judgment(M) to begin with God’s household,(N) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

18 And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?[e](O)

19 So then, let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust themselves(P) to a faithful Creator while doing what is good.

About the Elders

I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness(Q) to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed:(R) Shepherd God’s flock among you,(S) not overseeing[f] out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you;[g] not out of greed for money but eagerly; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd(T) appears, you will receive the unfading crown(U) of glory. In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with[h] humility toward one another, because

God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble.[i](V)

Conclusion

Humble(W) yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand(X) of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.(Y) Be sober-minded,(Z) be alert.(AA) Your adversary the devil(AB) is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. Resist him,(AC) firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.

10 The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory(AD) in Christ,[j] will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.[k] 11 To him be dominion[l] forever.[m] Amen.

12 Through Silvanus,[n](AE) a faithful brother (as I consider him), I have written to you briefly in order to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! 13 She who is in Babylon,(AF) chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(AG) Peace(AH) to all of you who are in Christ.[o]

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(M) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(N) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(O) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(P) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(Q) you are blessed,(R) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(S) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(T) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(U) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a](V)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(W) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(X) and a witness(Y) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(Z) Be shepherds of God’s flock(AA) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(AB) not pursuing dishonest gain,(AC) but eager to serve; not lording it over(AD) those entrusted to you, but being examples(AE) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(AF) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(AG) that will never fade away.(AH)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(AI) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(AJ) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[b](AK)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(AL) Cast all your anxiety on him(AM) because he cares for you.(AN)

Be alert and of sober mind.(AO) Your enemy the devil prowls around(AP) like a roaring lion(AQ) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(AR) standing firm in the faith,(AS) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(AT)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(AU) to his eternal glory(AV) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(AW) will himself restore you and make you strong,(AX) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(AY)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[c](AZ) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(BA) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(BB)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(BC) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(BD)

Peace(BE) to all of you who are in Christ.
