Godly Living

(A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your pure [a]and respectful behavior. (D)Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; but it should be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way the holy women of former times, (F)who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right [b](H)without being frightened by any fear.

(I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with [c](J)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

[d]To sum up, (K)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, [e](L)loving, (M)compassionate, and (N)humble; (O)not returning evil for evil or (P)insult for insult, but giving a (Q)blessing instead; for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you would (S)inherit a blessing. 10 For,

(T)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 (U)He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 (V)For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against evildoers.”

13 (W)And who is [f]there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you [g]are blessed. (Z)And do not fear their [h]intimidation, and do not be in dread, 15 but [i]sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make a [j]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, but (AD)with gentleness and (AE)respect; 16 [k]and keep a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (AH)it is better, (AI)if [l]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For (AJ)Christ also [m]suffered for sins (AK)once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might (AL)bring us to God, having been put to death (AM)in the flesh, but made alive (AN)in the [n]spirit; 19 in [o]which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who once were disobedient when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 (AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God [p]for a (AV)good conscience—through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (AX)who is at the right hand of God, (AY)having gone into heaven, (AZ)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

Keep Fervent in Your Love

Therefore, since (BA)Christ has [q]suffered in the flesh, (BB)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because (BC)the one who has [r]suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (BD)so as to live (BE)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human lusts, but for the (BF)will of God. For (BG)the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, [s](BH)having pursued a course of indecent behavior, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same excesses of (BI)[t]debauchery, and they (BJ)slander you; but they will give an account to Him who is ready to judge (BK)the living and the dead. For (BL)the gospel has for this purpose been [u]preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as people, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

(BM)The end of all things [v]is near; therefore, (BN)be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of [w]prayer. Above all, (BO)keep fervent in your love for one another, because (BP)love covers a multitude of sins. (BQ)Be hospitable to one another without (BR)complaint. 10 (BS)As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good (BT)stewards of the [x]multifaceted grace of God. 11 (BU)Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking (BV)actual words of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving [y](BW)by the strength which God supplies; so that (BX)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, (BY)to whom belongs the glory and [z]dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Share the Sufferings of Christ

12 (BZ)Beloved, do not be surprised at the (CA)fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you (CB)share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the (CC)revelation of His glory (CD)you may also rejoice and be overjoyed. 14 If you are insulted [aa](CE)for the name of Christ, (CF)you are blessed, (CG)because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you. 15 Make sure that (CH)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a [ab](CI)troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a (CJ)Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to (CK)glorify God in this name. 17 For it is time for judgment (CL)to begin [ac]with (CM)the household of God; and if it (CN)begins [ad]with us first, what will be the outcome for those (CO)who do not obey the (CP)gospel of God? 18 (CQ)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, [ae]what will become of the (CR)godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to (CS)the will of God are to entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Serve God Willingly

(CT)Therefore, I urge elders among you, as your (CU)fellow elder and a (CV)witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who is also a [af](CW)fellow partaker of the glory that is to be revealed: shepherd (CX)the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, (CY)not under compulsion but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and (CZ)not [ag]with greed but with eagerness; nor yet as (DA)domineering over [ah]those assigned to your care, but by [ai]proving to be [aj](DB)examples to the flock. And when the Chief (DC)Shepherd appears, you will receive the (DD)unfading [ak](DE)crown of glory. (DF)You [al]younger men, likewise, (DG)be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with (DH)humility toward one another, because (DI)God is opposed to the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.

Therefore (DJ)humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, having cast all your (DK)anxiety on Him, because He cares about you. (DL)Be of sober spirit, (DM)be on the alert. Your adversary, (DN)the devil, prowls around like a roaring (DO)lion, seeking someone to devour. [am](DP)So resist him, (DQ)firm in your faith, knowing that (DR)the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your [an]brothers and sisters who are in the world. 10 After you have suffered (DS)for a little while, the (DT)God of all grace, who (DU)called you to His (DV)eternal glory in Christ, will Himself (DW)perfect, (DX)confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 (DY)To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12 Through (DZ)Silvanus, our faithful brother [ao](for so I regard him), (EA)I have written to you briefly, [ap]exhorting and testifying that this is (EB)the true grace of God. (EC)Stand firm in it! 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, (ED)Mark. 14 (EE)Greet one another with a kiss of love.

(EF)Peace be to you all who are in Christ.

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves(A) to your own husbands(B) so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over(C) without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.(D) Rather, it should be that of your inner self,(E) the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.(F) For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God(G) used to adorn themselves.(H) They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord.(I) You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands,(J) in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Good

Finally, all of you, be like-minded,(K) be sympathetic, love one another,(L) be compassionate and humble.(M) Do not repay evil with evil(N) or insult with insult.(O) On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,(P) because to this(Q) you were called(R) so that you may inherit a blessing.(S) 10 For,

“Whoever would love life
    and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”[a](T)

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?(U) 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.(V) “Do not fear their threats[b]; do not be frightened.”[c](W) 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(X) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(Y) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(Z) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(AA) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(AB) to suffer for doing good(AC) than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once(AD) for sins,(AE) the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.(AF) He was put to death in the body(AG) but made alive in the Spirit.(AH) 19 After being made alive,[d] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits(AI) 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently(AJ) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.(AK) In it only a few people, eight in all,(AL) were saved(AM) through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you(AN) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience(AO) toward God.[e] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(AP) 22 who has gone into heaven(AQ) and is at God’s right hand(AR)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.(AS)

Living for God

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,(AT) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.(AU) As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(AV) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(AW) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(AX) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(AY) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(AZ) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(BA) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(BB) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(BC) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(BD) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(BE) Offer hospitality(BF) to one another without grumbling.(BG) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(BH) as faithful(BI) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(BJ) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(BK) so that in all things God may be praised(BL) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(BM)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(BN) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(BO) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(BP) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(BQ) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(BR) you are blessed,(BS) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(BT) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(BU) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(BV) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[f](BW)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(BX) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(BY) and a witness(BZ) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(CA) Be shepherds of God’s flock(CB) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(CC) not pursuing dishonest gain,(CD) but eager to serve; not lording it over(CE) those entrusted to you, but being examples(CF) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(CG) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(CH) that will never fade away.(CI)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(CJ) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(CK) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[g](CL)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(CM) Cast all your anxiety on him(CN) because he cares for you.(CO)

Be alert and of sober mind.(CP) Your enemy the devil prowls around(CQ) like a roaring lion(CR) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(CS) standing firm in the faith,(CT) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(CU)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(CV) to his eternal glory(CW) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(CX) will himself restore you and make you strong,(CY) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(CZ)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[h](DA) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(DB) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(DC)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(DD) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(DE)

Peace(DF) to all of you who are in Christ.

Growth in Christian Virtue

[a]Simon Peter, a (A)bond-servant and (B)apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have received (C)a faith of the same [b]kind as ours, [c]by (D)the righteousness of (E)our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: (F)Grace and peace be multiplied to you in (G)the knowledge of God and of Jesus [d]our Lord, for His (H)divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true (I)knowledge of Him who (J)called us [e]by His own glory and [f]excellence. Through [g]these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent (K)promises, so that by them you may become (L)partakers of the divine nature, having (M)escaped the (N)corruption that is in (O)the world on account of lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith (P)supply (Q)moral [h]excellence, and in your moral excellence, (R)knowledge, and in your knowledge, (S)self-control, and in your self-control, (T)perseverance, and in your perseverance, (U)godliness, and in your godliness, (V)brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they do not make you useless nor (W)unproductive in the true (X)knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the one who lacks these qualities is (Y)blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his (Z)purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to make certain about His (AA)calling and (AB)choice of you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never (AC)stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into (AD)the eternal kingdom of our (AE)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be (AF)abundantly (AG)supplied to you.

12 Therefore, (AH)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in (AI)the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it (AJ)right, as long as I am in (AK)this earthly [i]dwelling, to (AL)stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that (AM)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (AN)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (AO)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (AP)tales when we made known to you the (AQ)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (AR)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such a (AS)[j]declaration as this was made to Him by the (AT)Majestic Glory: “This is [k]My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this [l]declaration made from heaven when we were with Him on the (AU)holy mountain.

19 And so we have (AV)the prophetic word made more (AW)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (AX)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (AY)day dawns and the (AZ)morning star arises (BA)in your hearts. 20 But (BB)know this first of all, that (BC)no prophecy of Scripture [m]becomes a matter of [n]someone’s own interpretation, 21 for (BD)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (BE)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

The Appearance of False Prophets

But (BF)false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be (BG)false teachers (BH)among you, who will (BI)secretly introduce (BJ)destructive heresies, even (BK)denying the (BL)Master who (BM)bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their (BN)indecent behavior, and because of them (BO)the way of the truth will be (BP)maligned; and in their (BQ)greed they will (BR)exploit you with (BS)false words; (BT)their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

For (BU)if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into [o]hell and (BV)committed them to [p]pits of darkness, held for judgment; and did not spare (BW)the ancient world, but protected (BX)Noah, a [q]preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a (BY)flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He (BZ)condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an (CA)example [r]of what is coming for the (CB)ungodly; and if He (CC)rescued righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the (CD)perverted conduct of [s](CE)unscrupulous people (for by what he saw and heard that (CF)righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), (CG)then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from [t]a trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the (CH)day of judgment, 10 and especially those who [u](CI)indulge the flesh in its corrupt passion, and (CJ)despise [v]authority.

[w]Reckless, (CK)self-centered, they (CL)speak abusively of angelic [x]majesties without trembling, 11 (CM)whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a demeaning judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But (CN)these, like unreasoning animals, (CO)born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, using abusive speech where they have no knowledge, will in [y]the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, 13 suffering wrong as (CP)the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to (CQ)revel in the (CR)daytime. They are stains and blemishes, (CS)reveling in their [z]deceptions as they (CT)feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery [aa]that never cease from sin, (CU)enticing (CV)unstable souls, having hearts trained in (CW)greed, (CX)accursed children; 15 abandoning (CY)the right way, they have gone astray, having followed (CZ)the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved (DA)the [ab]reward of unrighteousness; 16 but he received a rebuke for his own offense, (DB)for a mute donkey, speaking with a human voice, restrained the insanity of the prophet.

17 These are (DC)springs without water and mists driven by a storm, (DD)for whom the [ac]black darkness has been reserved. 18 For, while speaking out (DE)arrogant words of no (DF)value they (DG)entice by fleshly desires, by (DH)indecent behavior, those who barely (DI)escape from the ones who live in error, 19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for (DJ)by what anyone is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have (DK)escaped the defilements of the world by (DL)the knowledge of the (DM)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again (DN)entangled in them and are overcome, (DO)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 (DP)For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from (DQ)the holy commandment (DR)handed on to them. 22 [ad]It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “(DS)A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”

Simon Peter, a servant(A) and apostle of Jesus Christ,(B)

To those who through the righteousness(C) of our God and Savior Jesus Christ(D) have received a faith as precious as ours:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance(E) through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.(F)

Confirming One’s Calling and Election

His divine power(G) has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him(H) who called us(I) by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(J) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(K) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(L)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(M) and to knowledge, self-control;(N) and to self-control, perseverance;(O) and to perseverance, godliness;(P) and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(Q) For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(R) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(S) But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(T) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(U)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(V) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(W) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(X) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(Y)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(Z) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(AA) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(AB) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(AC) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(AD) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(AE) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(AF) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(AG) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(AH) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](AI) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AJ)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AK) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AL) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AM) and the morning star(AN) rises in your hearts.(AO) 20 Above all, you must understand(AP) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(AQ) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(AR)

False Teachers and Their Destruction

But there were also false prophets(AS) among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.(AT) They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord(AU) who bought them(AV)—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct(AW) and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed(AX) these teachers will exploit you(AY) with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,(AZ) but sent them to hell,[c] putting them in chains of darkness[d] to be held for judgment;(BA) if he did not spare the ancient world(BB) when he brought the flood on its ungodly people,(BC) but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;(BD) if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,(BE) and made them an example(BF) of what is going to happen to the ungodly;(BG) and if he rescued Lot,(BH) a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless(BI) (for that righteous man,(BJ) living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials(BK) and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.(BL) 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire(BM) of the flesh[e] and despise authority.

Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings;(BN) 11 yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from[f] the Lord.(BO) 12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.(BP)

13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight.(BQ) They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[g](BR) 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce(BS) the unstable;(BT) they are experts in greed(BU)—an accursed brood!(BV) 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam(BW) son of Bezer,[h] who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.(BX)

17 These people are springs without water(BY) and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.(BZ) 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words(CA) and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping(CB) from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”(CC) 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing(CD) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(CE) and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.(CF) 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.(CG) 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”[i](CH) and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
