Undeserved Suffering

13 Who then will harm you if you are devoted to what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness,(A) you are blessed. Do not fear them[a](B) or be intimidated,[b](C) 15 but in your hearts regard[c] Christ[d] the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.(D) 16 Yet do this with gentleness and reverence, keeping a clear conscience,(E) so that when you are accused,[e] those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer(F) for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

18 For Christ also suffered(G) for sins once for all,(H) the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God.(I) He was put to death in the flesh[f](J) but made alive by the Spirit,[g] 19 in which[h] he also went and made proclamation to the spirits(K) in prison 20 who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah(L) while the ark was being prepared. In it a few—that is, eight people[i](M)—were saved through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body,(N) but the pledge[j] of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(O) 22 who has gone into heaven(P) and is at the right hand of God(Q) with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.(R)

Following Christ

Therefore, since Christ suffered[k] in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding[l]—because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished(S) with sin[m] in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will.(T) For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires,(U) drunkenness, orgies,(V) carousing, and lawless idolatry. They are surprised that you don’t join them in the same flood of wild living—and they slander[n] you. They will give an account to the one who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.(W) For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead,[o](X) so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards,(Y) they might live(Z) in the spirit according to God’s standards.

Do good, even if you suffer for it

13-16 After all, who in the ordinary way is likely to injure you for being enthusiastic for good? And if it should happen that you suffer “for righteousness’ sake”, that is a privilege. You need neither fear their threats nor worry about them; simply concentrate on being completely devoted to Christ in your hearts. Be ready at any time to give a quiet and reverent answer to any man who wants a reason for the hope that you have within you. Make sure that your conscience is perfectly clear, so that if men should speak slanderously of you as rogues they may come to feel ashamed of themselves for libelling your good Christian behaviour.

17-22 If it is the will of God that you should suffer it is really better to suffer unjustly than because you have deserved it. Remember that Christ the just suffered for us the unjust, to bring us to God. That meant the death of his body, but he came to life again in the spirit. It was in the spirit that he went and preached to the imprisoned souls of those who had been disobedient in the days of Noah—the days of God’s great patience during the period of the building of the ark, in which eventually only eight souls were saved in the flood. And I cannot help pointing out what a perfect illustration this is of the way you have been admitted to the safety of the Christian “ark” by baptism, which means, of course, far more than the mere washing of a dirty body: it means the ability to face God with a clear conscience. For there is in every true baptism the virtue of Christ’s rising from the dead. And he has now entered Heaven and is at God’s right hand, with all angels, authorities and powers subservient to him.

Following Christ will mean pain

1-6 Since Christ had to suffer physically for you, you must fortify yourselves with the same inner attitude that he must have had. You must realise that to be dead to sin inevitably means pain, and you should not therefore spend the rest of your time here on earth indulging your physical nature, but in doing the will of God. Our past life may have been good enough for pagan purposes, though it meant sensuality, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousals and worshipping forbidden gods. Indeed your former companions may think it very queer that you will no longer join with them in their riotous excesses, and accordingly say all sorts of unpleasant things about you. Don’t worry: they are the ones who will have to explain their behaviour before the one who is prepared to judge all men, whether living or dead. (For that is why the dead also had the Gospel preached to them—that it might judge the lives they lived as men and give them also the opportunity to share the eternal life of God in the spirit.)

13 (A)And who is [a]there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should (B)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (C)you [b]are blessed. (D)And do not fear their [c]intimidation, and do not be in dread, 15 but [d]sanctify (E)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (F)to make a [e]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (G)hope that is in you, but (H)with gentleness and (I)respect; 16 [f]and keep a (J)good conscience so that in the thing in which (K)you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (L)it is better, (M)if [g]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For (N)Christ also [h]suffered for sins (O)once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might (P)bring us to God, having been put to death (Q)in the flesh, but made alive (R)in the [i]spirit; 19 in [j]which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who once were disobedient when the (S)patience of God (T)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (U)the ark, in which a few, that is, (V)eight (W)persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 (X)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(Y)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God [k]for a (Z)good conscience—through (AA)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (AB)who is at the right hand of God, (AC)having gone into heaven, (AD)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

Keep Fervent in Your Love

Therefore, since (AE)Christ has [l]suffered in the flesh, (AF)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because (AG)the one who has [m]suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (AH)so as to live (AI)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human lusts, but for the (AJ)will of God. For (AK)the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, [n](AL)having pursued a course of indecent behavior, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same excesses of (AM)[o]debauchery, and they (AN)slander you; but they will give an account to Him who is ready to judge (AO)the living and the dead. For (AP)the gospel has for this purpose been [p]preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as people, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

Suffering for Right and Wrong

13 (A)And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 (B)But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. (C)“And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15 But [a]sanctify [b]the Lord God in your hearts, and always (D)be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the (E)hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 (F)having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Christ’s Suffering and Ours

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring [c]us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, [d]when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 (G)There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (H)(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, (I)but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and (J)is at the right hand of God, (K)angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

Christ’s Example to Be Followed

Therefore, since Christ suffered [e]for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, (L)but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past [f]lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready (M)to judge the living and the dead. For this reason (N)the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but (O)live according to God in the spirit.
