15 but [a]sanctify (A)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (B)to make a [b]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (C)hope that is in you, but (D)with gentleness and (E)respect; 16 [c]and keep a (F)good conscience so that in the thing in which (G)you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (H)it is better, (I)if [d]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For (J)Christ also [e]suffered for sins (K)once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might (L)bring us to God, having been put to death (M)in the flesh, but made alive (N)in the [f]spirit; 19 in [g]which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who once were disobedient when the (O)patience of God (P)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (Q)the ark, in which a few, that is, (R)eight (S)persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 (T)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(U)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God [h]for a (V)good conscience—through (W)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (X)who is at the right hand of God, (Y)having gone into heaven, (Z)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(A) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(B) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(C) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(D) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(E) to suffer for doing good(F) than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once(G) for sins,(H) the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.(I) He was put to death in the body(J) but made alive in the Spirit.(K) 19 After being made alive,[a] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits(L) 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently(M) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.(N) In it only a few people, eight in all,(O) were saved(P) through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you(Q) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience(R) toward God.[b] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(S) 22 who has gone into heaven(T) and is at God’s right hand(U)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.(V)
