1 Peter 2:5-10

⁵^(A)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as ^(B)a spiritual house, to be ^(C)a holy priesthood, ^(D)to offer spiritual sacrifices ^(E)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. ⁶For it stands in Scripture:

^(F)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
^(G)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

⁷So the honor is for you who ^(H)believe, but for those who ^(I)do not believe,

^(J)“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”^[a]

⁸and

^(K)“A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, ^(L)as they were destined to do.

⁹But you are ^(M)a chosen race, ^(N)a royal ^(O)priesthood, ^(P)a holy nation, ^(Q)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you ^(R)out of darkness into ^(S)his marvelous light. ¹⁰^(T)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Submission to Authority

¹³^(A)Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution,^[a] whether it be to the emperor^[b] as supreme, ¹⁴or to governors as sent by him ^(B)to punish those who do evil and ^(C)to praise those who do good. ¹⁵For this is the will of God, ^(D)that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. ¹⁶^(E)Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but ^(F)living as servants^[c] of God. ¹⁷^(G)Honor everyone. ^(H)Love the brotherhood. ^(I)Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Shepherd the Flock of God

5 So I exhort the elders among you, ^(A)as a fellow elder and ^(B)a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: ²^(C)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,^[a] ^(D)not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;^[b] ^(E)not for shameful gain, but eagerly; ³not ^(F)domineering over those in your charge, but ^(G)being examples to the flock. ⁴And when ^(H)the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the ^(I)unfading ^(J)crown of glory. ⁵Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. ^(K)Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ^(L)“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
