(A)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who (B)according to His great mercy (C)has caused us to be born again to (D)a living hope through the (E)resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an (F)inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and (G)will not fade away, (H)reserved in heaven for you, who are (I)protected by the power of God (J)through faith for (K)a salvation ready (L)to be revealed in the last time. (M)In this you greatly rejoice, even though now (N)for a little while, (O)if necessary, you have been distressed by (P)various [a]trials, so that the [b](Q)proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes (R)though tested by fire, (S)may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at (T)the revelation of Jesus Christ; and (U)though you have not seen Him, you (V)love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and [c]full of glory, obtaining as (W)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of [d]your souls.

10 (X)As to this salvation, the prophets who (Y)prophesied of the (Z)grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 [e]seeking to know what person or time (AA)the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He (AB)predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories [f]to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who (AC)preached the gospel to you by (AD)the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which (AE)angels long to [g]look.

Praise to God for a Living Hope

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!(A) In his great mercy(B) he has given us new birth(C) into a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,(E) and into an inheritance(F) that can never perish, spoil or fade.(G) This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,(H) who through faith are shielded by God’s power(I) until the coming of the salvation(J) that is ready to be revealed(K) in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice,(L) though now for a little while(M) you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.(N) These have come so that the proven genuineness(O) of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire(P)—may result in praise, glory and honor(Q) when Jesus Christ is revealed.(R) Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him(S) and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.(T)

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke(U) of the grace that was to come to you,(V) searched intently and with the greatest care,(W) 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ(X) in them was pointing when he predicted(Y) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,(Z) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you(AA) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(AB) Even angels long to look into these things.
