1 Kings 8:12-21

New International Version

¹²Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;^(A) ¹³I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell^(B) forever.”

¹⁴While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed^(C) them. ¹⁵Then he said:

“Praise be to the Lord,^(D) the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, ¹⁶‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt,^(E) I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name^(F) might be there, but I have chosen^(G) David^(H) to rule my people Israel.’

¹⁷“My father David had it in his heart^(I) to build a temple^(J) for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. ¹⁸But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. ¹⁹Nevertheless, you^(K) are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’^(L)

²⁰“The Lord has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded^(M) David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built^(N) the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. ²¹I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.”

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts^(A)

¹³When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,^(B) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.^(C) ¹⁴In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,^(D) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.^(E) ¹⁵So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. ¹⁶To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house^(F) into a market!” ¹⁷His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”^[a]^(G)

¹⁸The Jews^(H) then responded to him, “What sign^(I) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”^(J)

¹⁹Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”^(K)

²⁰They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” ²¹But the temple he had spoken of was his body.^(L) ²²After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.^(M) Then they believed the scripture^(N) and the words that Jesus had spoken.

²³Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,^(O) many people saw the signs^(P) he was performing and believed^(Q) in his name.^[b] ²⁴But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. ²⁵He did not need any testimony about mankind,^(R) for he knew what was in each person.^(S)
