16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.(A) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.(B) 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,(C) how can the love of God be in that person?(D) 18 Dear children,(E) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.(F)

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends,(G) if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God(H) 22 and receive from him anything we ask,(I) because we keep his commands(J) and do what pleases him.(K) 23 And this is his command: to believe(L) in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,(M) and to love one another as he commanded us.(N) 24 The one who keeps God’s commands(O) lives in him,(P) and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.(Q)

Love in Action

16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life(A) for us.(B) We should also lay down our lives for our brothers.(C) 17 If anyone has this world’s goods(D) and sees his brother in need(E) but closes his eyes(F) to his need—how can God’s love reside in him?(G)

18 Little children, we must not love with word or speech, but with truth and action.(H) 19 This is how we will know we belong to the truth(I) and will convince our conscience in His presence, 20 even if our conscience condemns us, that God is greater than our conscience, and He knows all things.(J)

21 Dear friends, if our conscience doesn’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and can receive whatever we ask from Him because we keep His commands(K) and do what is pleasing in His sight. 23 Now this is His command: that we believe in the name(L) of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commanded us. 24 The one who keeps His commands remains in Him,(M) and He in him. And the way we know that He remains in us(N) is from the Spirit(O) He has given us.

16 We know what love is because Jesus gave his life for us. This is why we must give our lives for each other. 17 If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. 18 Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it.

19 When we love others, we know we belong to the truth, and we feel at ease in the presence of God. 20 But even if we don't feel at ease, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if we feel at ease in the presence of God, we will have the courage to come near him. 22 He will give us whatever we ask, because we obey him and do what pleases him. 23 (A) God wants us to have faith in his Son Jesus Christ and to love each other. This is also what Jesus taught us to do. 24 If we obey God's commandments, we will stay one in our hearts with him, and he will stay one with us. The Spirit he has given us is proof that we are one with him.

The Outworking of Love

16 (A)By this we know love, (B)because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But (C)whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, (D)let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we [a]know (E)that we are of the truth, and shall [b]assure our hearts before Him. 20 (F)For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, (G)we have confidence toward God. 22 And (H)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments (I)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ (J)and love one another, as He gave [c]us commandment.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

24 Now (K)he who keeps His commandments (L)abides in Him, and He in him. And (M)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister[a] in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 19 Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. 20 Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

21 Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. 22 And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.

23 And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. 24 Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.
