¹⁶We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

¹⁶This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.^(A) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.^(B)

¹⁶Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

¹⁸Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

¹⁸Dear children,^(A) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.^(B)

¹⁸My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
