19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, (A)if our heart does not condemn us, (B)we have confidence before God; 22 and (C)whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and (D)do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, (E)that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and (F)love one another, (G)just as he has commanded us. 24 (H)Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God,[a] and God[b] in him. And (I)by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

Test the Spirits

Beloved, (J)do not believe every spirit, but (K)test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for (L)many (M)false prophets (N)have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: (O)every spirit that confesses that (P)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit (Q)that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and (R)now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for (S)he who is in you is greater than (T)he who is in the world. (U)They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and (V)the world listens to them. We are from God. (W)Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know (X)the Spirit of truth and (Y)the spirit of error.

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends,(A) if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God(B) 22 and receive from him anything we ask,(C) because we keep his commands(D) and do what pleases him.(E) 23 And this is his command: to believe(F) in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,(G) and to love one another as he commanded us.(H) 24 The one who keeps God’s commands(I) lives in him,(J) and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.(K)

On Denying the Incarnation

Dear friends,(L) do not believe every spirit,(M) but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.(N) This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(O) is from God,(P) but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(Q) which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.(R)

You, dear children,(S) are from God and have overcome them,(T) because the one who is in you(U) is greater than the one who is in the world.(V) They are from the world(W) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.(X) This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth(Y) and the spirit of falsehood.(Z)

  1. 1 John 4:6 Or spirit

19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
