The Test of Knowing Him

³ Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. ⁴ He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a ^(A)liar, and the truth is not in him. ⁵ But ^(B)whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God ^[a]is perfected ^(C)in him. By this we know that we are in Him. ^6 (D)He who says he abides in Him ^(E)ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

²² And ^(A)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments ^(B)and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. ²³ And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ ^(C)and love one another, as He gave ^[a]us commandment.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

²⁴ Now ^(D)he who keeps His commandments ^(E)abides in Him, and He in him. And ^(F)by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

² By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and ^(A)keep His commandments. ^3 (B)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And ^(C)His commandments are not burdensome.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

^15 (A)“If you love Me, ^[a]keep My commandments.

^21 (A)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and ^[a]manifest Myself to him.”

^22 (B)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

²³ Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, ^(C)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. ²⁴ He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and ^(D)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

^10 (A)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

¹¹ “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and ^(B)that your joy may be full.

^14 (A)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

^16 (A)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and ^(B)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father ^(C)in My name He may give you.

⁷ Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but ^(A)if I depart, I will send Him to you. ⁸ And when He has ^(B)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: ^9 (C)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; ^10 (D)of righteousness, ^(E)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; ^11 (F)of judgment, because ^(G)the ruler of this world is judged.

¹² “I still have many things to say to you, ^(H)but you cannot bear them now. ¹³ However, when He, ^(I)the Spirit of truth, has come, ^(J)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. ^14 (K)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
