If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.(A) 10 If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.(B)

Chapter 2

Christ and His Commandments. My children,[a] I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one.(C) He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world.(D)

Footnotes

  1. 2:1 Children: like the term “beloved,” this is an expression of pastoral love (cf. Jn 13:33; 21:5; 1 Cor 4:14). Advocate: for the use of the term, see Jn 14:16. Forgiveness of sin is assured through Christ’s intercession and expiation or “offering”; the death of Christ effected the removal of sin.

If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Christ Our Advocate

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make a liar out of God, and his word is not in us.

Christ Our Helper

I am writing this to you, my children, so that you will not sin; but if anyone does sin, we have someone who pleads with the Father on our behalf—Jesus Christ, the righteous one. And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone.

(A)If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and (B)cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 (C)If we say that we have not sinned, we (D)make Him a liar and (E)His word is not in us.

Christ Is Our Advocate

(F)My little children, I am (G)writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, (H)we have an [a](I)Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is (J)the [b]propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also (K)for the sins of the whole world.
