17 That is why (A)I sent[a] you Timothy, (B)my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ,[b] (C)as I teach them everywhere in every church. 18 Some are (D)arrogant, (E)as though I were not coming to you. 19 But (F)I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power. 20 For (G)the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. 21 What do you wish? (H)Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

It is actually reported that there is (I)sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, (J)for a man has his father's wife. And (K)you are arrogant! Ought you (L)not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

For though (M)absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled (N)in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are (O)to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so (P)that his spirit may be saved (Q)in the day of the Lord.[c]

(R)Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that (S)a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

17 For this reason I have sent to you(A) Timothy,(B) my son(C) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(D)

18 Some of you have become arrogant,(E) as if I were not coming to you.(F) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(G) if the Lord is willing,(H) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(I) talk but of power.(J) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(K) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(L) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(M) and have put out of your fellowship(N) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(O) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(P) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(Q) to Satan(R) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(S)

Your boasting is not good.(T) Don’t you know that a little yeast(U) leavens the whole batch of dough?(V)
