58 (A)Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in (B)the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord (C)your labor is not in vain.

The Collection for the Saints

16 Now concerning[a] (D)the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On (E)the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, (F)as he may prosper, (G)so that there will be no collecting when I come. And when I arrive, I will send (H)those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.

Plans for Travel

(I)I will visit you after passing through (J)Macedonia, for (K)I intend to pass through Macedonia, and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you may (L)help me on my journey, wherever I go. For I do not want to see you now (M)just in passing. I hope to spend some time with you, (N)if the Lord permits. But I will stay in Ephesus until (O)Pentecost, for (P)a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and (Q)there are many adversaries.

10 (R)When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease among you, for (S)he is doing (T)the work of the Lord, as I am. 11 So (U)let no one despise him. (V)Help him on his way (W)in peace, that he may return to me, for I am expecting him with the brothers.

Final Instructions

12 Now concerning (X)our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to visit you with the other brothers, but it was not at all his will[b] to come now. He will come when he has opportunity.

13 (Y)Be watchful, (Z)stand firm in the faith, (AA)act like men, (AB)be strong. 14 (AC)Let all that you do be done in love.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Corinthians 16:1 The expression Now concerning introduces a reply to a question in the Corinthians' letter; see 7:1; also verse 12

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,(A) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.(B)

The Collection for the Lord’s People

16 Now about the collection(C) for the Lord’s people:(D) Do what I told the Galatian(E) churches to do. On the first day of every week,(F) each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.(G) Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve(H) and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me.

Personal Requests

After I go through Macedonia, I will come to you(I)—for I will be going through Macedonia.(J) Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey,(K) wherever I go. For I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.(L) But I will stay on at Ephesus(M) until Pentecost,(N) because a great door for effective work has opened to me,(O) and there are many who oppose me.

10 When Timothy(P) comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord,(Q) just as I am. 11 No one, then, should treat him with contempt.(R) Send him on his way(S) in peace(T) so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.

12 Now about our brother Apollos:(U) I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.

13 Be on your guard; stand firm(V) in the faith; be courageous; be strong.(W) 14 Do everything in love.(X)
