To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,(A) to another a message of knowledge(B) by means of the same Spirit,

Two Kinds of Wisdom

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it(A) by their good life, by deeds(B) done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition(C) in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.(D) 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven(E) but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.(F) 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition,(G) there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven(H) is first of all pure; then peace-loving,(I) considerate, submissive, full of mercy(J) and good fruit, impartial and sincere.(K) 18 Peacemakers(L) who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.(M)

I came to you(A) in weakness(B) with great fear and trembling.(C) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(D) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(E) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(F)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(G) but not the wisdom of this age(H) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(I) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(J) that has been hidden(K) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(L) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(M) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[a]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(N)

10 these are the things God has revealed(O) to us by his Spirit.(P)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(Q) except their own spirit(R) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(S) of the world,(T) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(U) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[b] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(V) but considers them foolishness,(W) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

23 This is what the Lord says:

“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom(A)
or the strong boast of their strength(B)
or the rich boast of their riches,(C)
24 but let the one who boasts boast(D) about this:
that they have the understanding to know(E) me,
that I am the Lord,(F) who exercises kindness,(G)
    justice and righteousness(H) on earth,
    for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
