11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that (A)each one of you is saying, “I am [a]with Paul,” [b]or “I am [c]with (B)Apollos,” [d]or “I am [e]with [f](C)Cephas,” [g]or “I am [h]with Christ.” 13 [i]Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you (D)baptized [j]in the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I (E)baptized none of you except (F)Crispus and (G)Gaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized [k]in my name! 16 But I did baptize the (H)household of Stephanas also; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else. 17 (I)For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, (J)not with [l]cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made of no effect.

The Wisdom of God

18 For the word of the cross is (K)foolishness to (L)those who [m]are perishing, but to us who [n]are being saved it is (M)the power of God. 19 For it is written:

(N)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And the understanding of those who have understanding, I will confound.”

11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household(A) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;(B) another, “I follow Apollos”;(C) another, “I follow Cephas[a]”;(D) still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?(E) 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus(F) and Gaius,(G) 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household(H) of Stephanas;(I) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize,(J) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom(K) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness(L) to those who are perishing,(M) but to us who are being saved(N) it is the power of God.(O) 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
    the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[b](P)
