Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Listen to me, my brothers and my people; [a]I (A)had intended to build a [b]permanent home for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and for (B)the footstool of our God. So I had made preparations to build it. But God said to me, ‘(C)You shall not build a house for My name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’ Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, (D)chose me from all the household of my father to be king over Israel (E)forever. For (F)He has chosen Judah to be a leader; and (G)in the house of Judah, my father’s house, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. (H)Of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons), (I)He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. He said to me, ‘Your son (J)Solomon is the one who shall build My house and My courtyards; for I have chosen him to be a son to Me, and I will be a Father to him. I will establish his kingdom forever (K)if he resolutely performs My commandments and My ordinances, as [c]is done now.’ So now, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the [d]presence of our God, keep and seek after all the commandments of the Lord your God so that you may possess the good land and leave it as an inheritance to your sons after you forever.

“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and (L)serve Him wholeheartedly and with a willing [e]mind; (M)for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. (N)If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; (O)be courageous and act.”

King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart(A) to build a house as a place of rest(B) for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool(C) of our God, and I made plans to build it.(D) But God said to me,(E) ‘You are not to build a house for my Name,(F) because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’(G)

“Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me(H) from my whole family(I) to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah(J) as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel.(K) Of all my sons—and the Lord has given me many(L)—he has chosen my son Solomon(M) to sit on the throne(N) of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build(O) my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son,(P) and I will be his father. I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws,(Q) as is being done at this time.’

“So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel(R) and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands(S) of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.(T)

“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion(U) and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart(V) and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him,(W) he will be found by you; but if you forsake(X) him, he will reject(Y) you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.”
